A friend told me today that to disable a catalytic converter all you had to do is punch a hole in it, empty it then patch the hole.

Is that true? what is in a converter to empty?

You can "disable" a cat by taking a broomstick to "hollow" it out, but if you do, you will not pass inspection Citrix :)

its not for me. i have a 2004 Camry and wont need a CC for a long time. its for my asshat, brokeass, cheap, penny pinching friend of mine.

im just curious, his solution to not going to a junk yard hunt to find one sounds fishy to me.

If he needs one to pass inspection, then broomsticking his current one won't help. If he's already passed, and just wants better exhaust flow, then broomsticking will work. He could be in serious trouble if caught though.

not to hijack the thread, but a buddy of mine and his dad (a mechanic) told me my car's exhaust sounds bad. They said it's probably the catalytic converter. What's a new one cost?

While that will certainly ruin it's emissions, because it will wreck the chemical process of the cat. , it won't really do anything good for you, like improving flow, since you'll still have the whole honeycomb thing in there. So I guess if you just wanted to spite the environment for no reason at all, then lead additive would do the job.

And Yzzim, an AC Delco would probably run around $400 or so. You should just go to a custom exhaust shop and get a nice Magnaflow on there instead. After install w/ dual O2 bosses, you'd be right around $300, but you'll have a much better sounding and better performing (flowing) catalytic converter.

$100 installed is a pretty common price for a standard replacement catalytic converter.

There is a sort of "honeycomb" of platinum/palladium in a catalytic converter, the surface of which acts as a catalyst for a few reactions which reduce pollution. You can knock it out with a pipe but doing so is illegal. Lead in leaded gasoline or octane booster supposedly binds to the metals and is said to poison the catalyst. Running too rich with a disabled AIR system can coat it and plug it up as well.

$400! Wow. :(

Never thought of a custom exhaust shop...thanks, I'll look into it!

The $100 deal would be true before 1997. Now cars have O2 sensors mounted directly on the catalytic converter in most cases. This means you need the fancy new Magnaflow\Carsounds dual O2 cats. Or you could have your exhaust shop put bosses in the pipes before and after the cat, but then it gets iffy as to if things are going to be ok w/ the computer.

A bit of an unrelated note, but it should be said that catalytic converters carry with them a 10-year warranty as stipulated by Federal law.
