alright,

I'm about to build a computer for my friend, and was wondering if this configuration would work. I'm really just trying to find out if there's any known issues between any of the parts, or if anyone has any recommendations, or better ideas.

Abit KG7 (not sure if Lite or Raid yet)
AMD 1600 XP cpu
256 (or maybe 512) Megs Crucial 2100 Registered ECC Ram
Maxtor 7200rpm 40 Gig
Cheap case with 300W power supply
Linksys 10/100 Ethernet Card

and

either a 1) 32Mb LeadTek GF2 MX200 w/ tv-out 2) 64Mb CardExpert GF2 MX 3) 32Mb VisionTek Xtasy GeForce 2 GTS

I'm kinda worried that the video card will be a bottleneck on this computer, but he won't really be using it for alot of gaming.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
 
If you are only going to stick up to 512mb of RAM in this system, then stick with non-parity/unbuffered. No sense on spending the extra cash IMHO. 🙂

i didn't know what the diff. was between the diff. types of ram, so i just assumed the it would be better. There's only 5 dollars difference betwen them for a 256Mb stick though. Hrmmmmm.....

what about the rest of the system? everything else sound good?
 
i had tried to build a system for my friend with the abit kg7, and the athlon xp 1800. i had some problems with it, but i had no idea what it was. i brought it back to the shop, and the guy pulled some jumpers, and got it to work, but i had no idea what he did. so...good luck. my friend's computer isnt working now because he says it keeps freezing. i havent had a chance to take a look at it yet.
 
I have had no problems with a KG7-RAID board since I got it. Rock stable. Just make sure you have the newest BIOS version available which is 5W if you are going to use an XP processor. If you buy one retail, then it may already come with that BIOS. It is a great board IMO, though the new KR7A-RAID board looks quite nice. Good Luck!
 
Buffered ECC ram is error correcting. It may help with stability, But it will hurt performance. 99% of home users do not need ECC (There are the few that do). Its good mainly for Servers that will be under heavy loads all of the time that are not allowed to crash (well ... net supposed to) ....
