Will this card
be able to run World of warcraft? I'm building a system for a friend. He's getting an Athlon XP 2500 Barton processor w/ 512MB of ram.

ahhh ... the million dollar question. Yes, will it run smoothly?
I'm not a gamer so I'm not too sure. I do know he's not willing to pay $500 for the higher end video card. Is that Direct 9 thing compatible with this card?

of course it will run smooth, the thing has 256Mb of onboard memory and has a 128 bit bus. I run half life 2 on a decrepid and crippled 9600SE (it's a POS version of the 9600) and I get 70 FPS on 800x600 resolution. So, with that said, and Half Life 2 being a GPU demanding game, you should be more than fine. If you go anywhere above 12x10 resolution that may slow you down a bit IMO.

you guys are aware that the 256 version of the 9600pro is SLOWER than the 128 meg version right? it has slower clock speeds.
