Is it just me, or does it seem like there have been a lot of kidnappings lately?

No it's just you... kidnappings happen all the time.. it's just now that the media wants to do a cover story on every kid who's been missing for 24 hours.

The media attention is a good thing in any kidnapping situation. Even though the motives behind the attention are lame, the coverage is helping law enforcement resolve the cases much quicker.

As for me, I just watch less CNN.

I gotta disagree with you Andy, the girl in San Diego got plenty of media attention, and I've seen several other kidnappes in the news who don't match your profile.

I did not expect that they would ever find Chandra Levy. But they did. Eventually I think they will find Elizabeth Smart, too.

There are some exceptions...but lets take a look see on people the public remembers, and lets see what they all have in common. Who remembers:

Jon-Benet Ramsey
Elizabeth Smart
Polly Klaas
Adam Walsh

Now what did you just say in your quote? You said "the girl in San Diego". Everyone who turns on a TV, listens to the radio, opens a newspaper, or go on the internet knows who Elizabeth Smart is, whereas "that girl in San Diego" is just "that girl in San Diego." I bet more people know more about Elizabeth Smart because of this compared to "the girl in San Diego", or "that girl in Pennsylvania that escaped from her kidnappers". See what I mean?

You are right. There have been a lot of kidnappings lately.

I think that they might find her one day but I don't think she will be alive when they do. :(

Samantha Runion did not come from a rich family, and the publicity the case got is clearly the reason they quickly caught her abductor, too bad it was too late..

you guys who complain about child abductions getting publicity should try having a kid of your own..because of the publicity of recent abduction cases, many states are putting in place "Amber Alert" or other similar systems, which is a good thing..so stop crying about the media coverage of abductions...at least it can help whereas too much news is crap about meaningless stories..

ya there have been a lot of amber alerts in socal..
helps because someone stopped a kidnappers van in san diego, called to cops, and got the kid back!

The reason most people remember the names is because they are unique. Jon-Benet, Smart, and Polly seem to stick in my mind, so does Runnion because it rhymes with "onion". Being pretty and white has little to do with it. The only reason people know of Adam Walsh is because his father is the host of America's Most Wanted.

When my Michelle disappeared there was no national coverage. Hell I had to beg the local TV station to broadcast that she was missing, and that took almost a week, and the Police didnt even ask them to do so. The local newspaper, The Lawton Constitution refused to print her story as missing untill two weeks had passed. Seems that was their policy on missing persons due to so many run aways, that they saw it a waste of thier time. It wasnt untill they all realized that she would never be seen again that they gave any real attention to it, and even then only a tiny article in a non attention getting part of the paper. You see if your child is 21, she is considered an adult, and most people dont give a rats ass what happens to an adult. If it doesnt affect your direct family, its just another story.

At the time of Michelle's disappearance John John Kennedy and wife went down in the Ocean. Millions and Millions of dollars spent on media coverage and recovery and that blanketed the media in those weeks.

My daughters murderer could very well die without us EVER knowing the story or where her remains rest. :(

Yes, its sad, but unless you are linked to someone with strings to pull, your story may never be heard.

Of the cases you cited in your list all the well known ones are dead. Adam Walsh's father went on to start Americas Most Wanted which is why he and that case are so well known, Jon-Benet is still unsolved with the family as the prime suspects, Polly Klaas likewise dead in a brutal manner. The 2 unknown ones are unknown because they are both now home and safe. The girl that escaped was not missing long enough for a very public search to begin so there is 0 reason for her name to be seared in the public memory. It would be nice if people would quit looking for a race/class angle in every single thing that happens in this country.

:Q

I could never imagine the pain of such a personal tragedy as a situation like this. Sory to hear it. :(

I sure hope so. :(

I'm actually not sure about kidnappings statistically, but I'm pretty sure the media is just playing this up. Gotta have something to fill the relatively mundane airspace (re: shark attacks a year ago) until the tributes in a week and a half. :(

what if everyone emailed a television network on mastertech01's daughter's behalf. I know in SoCal there are a few televison networks that will do "unsolved crime" stories. Unfortunately they only televise stories of interest in this area. If we get a hold of any Lawton networks that do these kind of stories maybe they'll get the word out or of course we could all wait for one specific night and email america's most wanted and hope they do a quick profile.

Oh, I don't look at everything at a race/class angle. My beef here is that seemingly all these rich little white girls get kidnapped, and get all this publicity, while other cases such as mastertech go unnoticed, or even unpublicized. My beef ISN'T that they get no publicity. Some equality might be in order though.

And Adam Walsh was famous when they found his head in a canal in south florida, his dad just got famous and added to that afterwards. And I really don't see how "Elizabeth Smart" is any more unique than Kimberly Smith or something.

Good idea, but wait until after Sept 11. Around Sept 11 all the media coverage will be on what happened that day.

its not about race as others have said, but how they were taken and from where. theres an emotional difference between a child being taken while walking to the store in an iffy neighborhood and a child being taken straight out of her bedroom in a nice neighborhood. why are they white? well most of the US is white, majority of well off people are white, its statistics. you might have asked why micheal jordans dads murder got so much attention back then. was it because he was black. stuff like that eh? :p
