These aren't the exact IP's of the machines, but I though they had to be closer then this. I don't have a lot of time to explain, but these are two machines encoding and decoding video using xp embedded and the IP addresses I was given to configure them don't seem to be right, plus I can't ping one from the other. They are connected using a switch and they are the only two nodes on the LAN.
 
only if the subnet mask is 255.0.0.0 would they be on the same LAN. If it is something else then you need a router for them to communicate

10.1.1.5 and 10.1.1.6 with a mask of 255.255.255.0 would be on the same LAN.
 
It turned out they were thinking of another company that was using a router. I'm now using IP's in the same subnet.
