Will there be a midrange "R600"

I will be looking for a videocard between 250-300 bucks. The R600 looks like a real kicker, and it is DX10. My question is will there be a "6600GT" of the R600? That is a card that is based on the new architecture and supports DX10, but will not be fully blow 64pipes and such. I'm looking for best bang for the buck.

I'm sure there will be a midrange card of some sort from both NVIDIA and ATI, it just might not launch at the same time as the flagship cards.

NO.
from this generation onwards ati will only produce top of the line cards. no midrange EVER again.

Further more they will burn all the leftover cards from the previous generation when the new high end is released so that no card can ever be classified as MIDRANGE.

Well, ATi still can't produce anything close to what nVidia did with the 6600gt....ATi has always sucked teh nutzors at the mdrange market.

6600gt was a good midrange card for few months after it was released , then ATI had much better product selling at same price.

They also have self terminate protocols in every midrange card from the days of 9500pro :! as soon as next year :! the card will start to activate its hidden explosive inside the core

In answer to the OP RV630 is going to be ATI's competitor to the 8600's & is slated for H1 2007. 2006 - 2007 Roadmap ATi & nVidia

Wasn't the X600/700/800 ATI's midrange card not the X800XL? The X800XL was made to fit somewhere between the 6800nu & the 6800GT but they altered their plans when they realised the X700XT wasn't going to appear.

Lets not forget how nVidia didn't need to rush to bring out the 7600's to compete with the X1600's as the 6600GT was still capable in that segment. That's how good ATi's midrange has been. Granted they did fix that a fair bit with the X1800GTO & the new X1650XT looks like a good card too.

6600gt was a good midrange card for few months after it was released , then ATI had much better product selling at same price.

ATI never seems to be able to targwet the range Nvidia does with the 6600 GT/7600 GT typically, no good 128Bit cards with an economical die size since the RV3xx days.

I hope the RV560 X1650 XT will change all that, we will see.

Radeon 9500 Pro, a expensive mid range product, good performance though based on the high end die.

X800 GTO is ATI dumping inventory in preparation for R500 derivatives also based on the high end die.

X1800 XT for 300US was pretty insane, a good deal but costly for ATI again based on the high end die, but not so bad since were talking about 300US here.

I would say the last time ATI had a decent mid range performer would be the Radeon 9600 Pro/XT. Those were the days of glory for ATI.

That said ATI does very well in performance mainstream arenas and the flagship this generation, it's the mainstream they need to address.

X1950 Pro is a performance mainstream core. Not meant to be in the same class as the 7600 GT level this generation.

I can't wait to see what kinda mainstream core are developed for both sides including Nvidia and ATI for this new generation.

There is a lot of market fracturing going on right now. I'm not sure I know what the "mid-range" market really means any more. Is that $100-$150? Is it $150-$200? Is it $200-$250?

It seems to me to be inadequate to speak about "mid-range" cards as if that is a useful term. We have "lower mid-range," "middle mid-range," and "upper mid-range," cards to contend with.

ATI and nVidia both have able competitors in each of these segments, they've just done it in far different fashions. ATI, perhaps because of the failure of the x1600, has done a good job of repositioning last-generation high-end cards to address these markets (x800/850 series). nVidia, on the other hand, has done a much better job (in recent memory) of designing a GPU for these price-points from the ground up (6600/7600 series).

Realistically, each manufacturer seems to go through 'dead' periods when their product line really doesn't have a good fit for a very specific price-point and they have to bend over backwards to compensate.

Not really sure if I've learned much. My whole point was to see if there was infact a 150-300 dollar card coming from ATI that would be DX10 compatable. I guess for nVidia for that matter.

Do not adjust this thread, it has been confiscated by the Total Sarcasm Crew :D

Since when have nVidia/ATi NOT made a midrange card? To my knowledge they always have, so no reason to think any different. As for names? Have to wait and see.

I suppose I get what people are saying. Of course there will be a midrange. The R600 is just so secretive all the details leaking are "64 pipes blah blah". There was never anything like "40 pipes for the ____ model which will be priced lower". I suppose time will only tell.

ATI will release a mid range models for lower mid range, mid range and upper mid range. But who knows the origin. For the upper mid range maybe they'll just take R600 chips which didn't make the cut and call it radeon x2800GTO/PRO etc.....And will have a bunch of cards like the x2600 XT/PRO(mid range and lower midrange) and X2300 XT/PRO/Hyper Memory/Le etc....

Dude the 6600GT was a piece of crap that I'm surprised that anybody even bothered to buy.

Seriously that card made very little sense because the 6800NU was priced only very slightly above it and gave a bazillion times more performance, and you got the chance to unlock some pipelines to boot.
