I'm going to give EQ2 a try, it would be nice to see some benchmarks since EQ2 is coming out very soon. Unfortunatly there were never any benchmarkes for EQ1. EQ is a popular game, probably more popular that X2 or Serious Sam or that Aqua game. The graphic should be very nice and detailed. But I haven't seen any benchmarks using the game. Why is that? Will there be a benchmark?

I doubt you'll ever see a benchmark for EQ or any of the other MMORPG's.

Why? Because those games don't require the same amount of graphic horsepower compared to FPS games like UT2K4, Doom3, HL2, etc.

Basically, in MMORPGs, if you can get 25-30 FPS, then you're fine. Whereas in FPS type games, anything less than 25 FPS and the game is unplayable. You'll still need a newer graphics card to play EQ2, but the speed between a typical MMORPG and typical FPS game is like comparing apples to oranges.

I don't see how a MMORPG game requires less graphids hp. Some of the raids we had in EQ1 would have 30-50 people and we'd have to turn off all the eye candy, lower resolutions and face walls. When EQ1 upgraded their graphis, a whole slew of people bought better video cards to keep their frame rate up. You may be right but I just don't see how MMORPG and FPS shooter games are different. It would be a shame that no benchmarks are done because of this belief because people are going to be buying for EQ2 just like they bought for Doom3.

Not really, EQ2 has some amazing graphics for a MMORPG, It's way up there in terms of overall graphics, and the PC needed. A 9800 Pro will do well in it, but it won't show off the full game, nothing really will right now, tho a 6800 comes close. Sure it is playable at lower FPS... but it still graphics wise holds up to some of the best right now.

They wouldn't want people to know what sort of awful FPS they'll get judging by the polycount in their screenshots.

It's easy for them if people are dumb and just look at the pretty still screenshots.

Do you think it's Sony's fault for not creating one? I don't know what all goes into creating a benchmark. Maybe ArmchairAthlete is right about them not wanting people to know. Dulanic said that the new cards won't handle the game with full eye candy, which might be right because I'm sure they are trying to make it long lasting graphic wise, but if it's so demanding that hard to obtain 30fps without the most expensive gear people might turn away.

That's exactly their intention... make it so that in a year or 2 from now the best hardware can run the highest settings. MMOs are lasting games, so it does make sense... their graphics wont be outdated in 3 years. Keep in mind, it will run on most cards GF3+ just with lower settings.

Correction - There were 2 Official benchmarks for Final Fantasy XI (mmorpg) which were pretty widely used by internet websites.

I have never played EQ1 .. but plan on getting EQ2, will I be totally lost as far as story line goes or anything like that or will I be able to just jump right in?

Yes you should be able to jump right in. EQ in the past seemed to favor those who had a lot of time to play. Hopefully with the lessons learned from all the different MMORPG games EQ2 will be friendlier to the casual gamer.

Fraps is interesting. So you can record a segment of a game and play it back using different video cards and get an fps stats?

Not really. FRAPS captures the FPS while you are playing- either on screen while you are playing, and or in the game movie it saves.

You can't use it to benchmark different video cards... just capture the FPS for the card you are using.

the latter for certain. Two cities, one good, one evil. USed to be many cities, one for each race. Other cities are now "lost" somewhere in the now destroyed world. World was destroyed by a moon falling from the sky. That's about it. Oh and there are many gods but they appear to have been misplaced.

I am also surprised that there is not a benchmark for EverQuest. With the server lag and then put ~70 people together with full effects and eye candy on, there is a whole heck of a lot more going on the screen than I have every seen in any FPS shooter. I think an EQ benchmark would be very significant.

They reccomend 1-2 gigs of ram. Overall it sounds like it needs a beast of a system to run at high settings.
I can say that World of Warcraft does not require anywhere near what EQ2 needs. Running WoW 1600x1200 high settings smoothly on a 9800pro 768 ram, xp3000+

I'm just not going to spend $500 in hardware upgrades to play a game like EQ2.
