Will the R630 beat the X1950 Pro?

It probably will. It will have Dx10 support so it will probably be a similar case to the 8600 series where they may have less raw power than comparably priced Dx9 cards but might be slightly more future proof.

Only the people under NDA know for sure right now.

And futureproofing with a midrange card as a deciding rason? That's like pixel shader 3.0 support on a 6600GT. Wouldn't bank on a $200 midrange card being able to run games 12-24 months from now at any acceptable resolution and settings.

Actually, even if it's not a whole lot faster it should offer newer features much like the 8600GTS, so that alone may make it better than the 1950pro.

i think they're launching at the same time as R600 so the NDA should lift on the same date I would think:)

There are already leaked benches of the card.. sadly it performs around the 8600GTS level. However we wont find out til much late on.

Leaked benches make the rv630 seem no better than a 8600gts, which means it may not outperform a x1950pro in most cases, and will probably get smoked by a x1950xt. Unless of course those leaked number are wrong.

In that case, what would be the bonus in buying the R630 then over the X1950 Pro? DX10 and Shader Model 4? Improved AVIVO? Integrated audio? HDMI?

Sheesh, I kind of wonder whether these things will be worth it or not. But I guess for me it might not be too important since I like UT2004 and BF2. I was just kind of thinking what would happen if I wanted to play UT3 on XP, that's all.

UT3 will play in directX 9 mode on XP, though I wonder if the extra efficiency of Dx10 on Vista will let the 8600s and X2600s catch up to their Dx9 predecessors.
