I currently have an e6300 and was able to overclock well on this motherboard, from 1.86 to 3ghz easily. Yet when i go to the official site they list N/A for the mobo. For anyone who has this motherboard (revision 2 is what i have) did any of the q series intel 775 processor work for you?

I got my mobo back in late 2006..

The main thing which makes me think this won't work fully is the FSB, your board says it's max is 1066mhz but the chip uses 1333mhz so if it does boot it'd be clocked just below 2.2Ghz. Even if you're currently clocking a bus higher than that, you might not get that FSB with a quad. There's a BIOS update which mentions Kentsfield support but nothing else for the quads which makes this look even less likely. Hopefully someone with the board can give a more definitive answer but I wouldn't chance it.

I *think* I remember seeing the two die quads on the S3 rev 1.1 list. archive.org?

Oh well i guess this is the last time i'm ever dealing with intel, for a long time.... i'll just wait till amd releases their new socket and possibly get a 6 core cpu while at it, if it comes out... and it's probably the last time i'm dealin with gigabyte also..

Chipset 965 was ages ago in the computer world. That's like asking Microsoft to continue supporting updates for Windows 95. I'd imagine Gigabyte cannot afford to continue supporting that mobo bios. There also might be inherent incompatibilities with it - might

Sorry, it's just EOL

Good Luck

?? You bought a P965 chipset board in late '06, which launched in early summer '06. Penryn and the 45nm stuff was a long ways off, hell Intel kept releasing faster 65nm chips for a while there. Remember, on the flip side, many/most AM2 boards from the same era of mid '06 aren't Phenom or Phenom II capable, and AM2+ was pretty rare until 2007 (same time as P35 Bearlake).

It's rather amazing that 45nm works on any P965 board, but a few support them. Do you know what board rev you have?

Don't worry about the 1066 bus, any decent P965 board (like yours) will do 1333 all day long. Remember to verify your voltage though, some P965 boards will try to run 65mn volts on the 45nm chips, adding heat, limiting overclocks, and potentially damaging the chip if left too high.

People having good luck with Wolfdale (E8xxx series 45nm) on your board. 3.3 is confirmed by multiple people, along with 2.0, and the final post has a guy with a rev 1.0 board running an E8400 @ 3.6ghz w/400fsb!

Anyway, no reason to hate on Intel or Gigabyte here, things change, that's computers for ya. It's no different with AMD or Intel, and your current board still has some life :) Unless you want to jump to a 790X + 720BE or something.

Like Arkaign said, really depends upon the revision of the board you have. I'm running a Gigabyte 965P-DS3 board, rev. 3.3, and it has taken many of the Wolfdale cpus without a problem....and is currently running a Q9550 without a hitch.

But the rev. makes a world of difference. Rev. 1.3 has the hardest time with 1333 support; Rev. 2.0 is a little better; Rev. 3.3 will "unofficially" support every S775 cpu except the Extreme versions (with at least F14 BIOS.)

Here's the supported cpu list for the 965P-DS3, Rev. 3.3 mb:

Good luck.......and quit the hatin' on Intel or Gigabyte....crying about either or both of them not having support for cpus that were developed well after the launch of the chipset is just juvenile at least.

Thank you, I wonder if my rev 1.1 S3 board will run the Q9550. It does run 1600Mhz all day long, though.

As always I regard compatibility to be a bonus. To date, I have not heard had sockets that would accept a new processor 2 years after launce. SS7, S370, Socket A, 993, etc, could not, at least not at the processor's nominal speed.
