Will the post office mail a envelope with a UMD memory stick in it?

How would they know what's in the envelope?

I'd put it in one of those small brown envelopes with the flap. Wrap the stick in paper and fold the envelope into a small square -- tape it up and you're good to go.

1.2 Nonmachinable Criteria

b. Is polybagged, polywrapped, or enclosed in any plastic material.

c. Has clasps, strings, buttons, or similar closure devices.

d. Contains items such as pens, pencils, or loose keys or coins that cause the thickness of the mailpiece to be uneven (see 601.11.18, Odd-Shaped Items in Paper Envelopes).

e. Is too rigid (does not bend easily when subjected to a transport belt tension of 40 pounds around an 11-inch diameter turn).

f. For pieces more than 4-1/4 inches high or 6 inches long, the thickness is less than 0.009 inch.

g. Has a delivery address parallel to the shorter dimension of the mailpiece.

h. Is a self-mailer with a folded edge perpendicular to the address if the piece is not folded and secured according to 201.3.13.2.

i. Is a booklet-type piece with the bound edge (spine) along the shorter dimension of the piece or at the top, regardless of the use of tabs, wafer seals, or other fasteners. [C050.2.2]

Think about it... if you are mailing someone a bomb or anthrax or something biological.. don't you want to make sure it gets there? Extra postage is always a red flag that someone doesn't understand the postal service and it's fees.

I bought a smart media stick from a person on FS/FT. They mailed it in a regular envelope but never put any padding or cardboard or anything around it, just threw the stick in an envelope.

Needless to say I never got it. I got the envelope, but the media stick was gone. There was a 1" cut on the side of the envelope so I thought someone stole it. Took it down to the post office and the guy said that the machines that sort the mail tend to take small objects in the envelopes and make them rip the envelope just enough for the media stick to escape.

Anyway, don't know what happened. Think I ended up paying for half the memory stick since I couldn't prove I didn't recieve it

This just doesn't make sense, and I'm not quite sure I believe it. I put on the extra postage because I wasn't sure about the rate vs. weight issue. I seriously doubt that all mail with extra postage is flagged because I bet there is a lot of it.
