Will the P4 3.06GHz 533 price EVER fall or should I change my upgrade path

I have an Albatron 845 board & was hoping to get a HT enabled chip this summer. However, the new HT chips are 800 MHz bus leaving me with only one HT option, the 3.06GHz chip. At a cost of $330 for the 3.06, I might as well get a new board + a 2.4c The only problem is that I don't want to spend that much $ and I don't want to rebuild my system...

So, does anyone know whether any other 533MHz bus HT chips will be sold? Based on past processor price declines should I give up on the 3.06 going down this summer or do I still have hope?

Not much hope.
1) I don't see Intel releasing any more 533 MHz chips,
2) The next scheduled major Intel price drop is in October, and
3) With all companies on pricewatch (except one) listing the 3.06 GHz P4 in the $360+ range, the chance of them beating $330 anytime soon is slim.

I agree. That price isn't going to fall off quickly any time soon. I realize that you have your heart set on a HT cpu for that system. But it seems that if there is a bottleneck in your rig, it is your vid card. The mb/cpu/ram setup looks like you have some rather out of date components screaming! IMO you would see a much bigger performance boost by laying down ~$200 for another graphics card.

Look in the FS/FT forum, you might find a 3.06 a good bit cheaper.

it may be tempting to upgrade to a P4 800 FSB chip, but if you can score a 3.06 cheap enough it should be able to hold you for a good while.

I have a 3.06 chip that I wouldn't mind getting rid of. BUt i'm a bit of a bind. I want to buy an 800 mhz bus chip but I'm not entirely sure I can run them properly (granite bay). If i could confirm it works properly I'd sell this for significantly lower than $330.

I don't think you can run a 200 FSB chip on a GB board.

However, you could sell the board too and get an 865PE chipset board. Probably a much better board in the long run that GB.

I think you can, just not officially.

IT can be done, what I'm unsure of is how much beyond 200mhz it can be taken. THe board is supposedly locked at 200. I'm going to order a 2.4 c chip soon and see how it works.

I have a p4T533 and I've been waiting as well. Sometimes Intel really sucks. Reminds of when the 233MMX was the chip to have. It took like 3 years for it to fall to a resonable price, by then it was out gunned.

Bahhh 🙁

Not the answers I was hoping for, but I guess they were what I expected! What a pain in the butt to have to re-build my system. But I need HT and more speed!

A used one not going to work for you? OH well, i probably should keep this thing anyway. Wasted alot of good money on it 🙂

I think INtel's going to drop prices around october. INquirer had an article regarding their roadmap but i cant' find it anymore.

Maybe you can find out if you could stick a P4 2.4c in your mobo and then overclock it to 200MHz FSB. Your RAM seems to be running at 200+MHz so I'm guessing that if the P4 2.4c was detected as a 133MHz FSB chip with 12x mult, you could overclock it a bit and get it up to full speed, maybe?

Unfortunately, I'm running at 152. The board will go to 166, so I'd have to underclock a 2.4c

The thought of putting together a new system, re-loading my progs, etc. is distasteful! I didn't want to have to do that for a few months...
