I mean games of the mortal kombat/grand theft auto variety (you know, blood/guts/dark themes), or will it be 'fun' kiddie games mostly?

yeah but call of duty isn't really a 'blood 'n guts' type game though... i mean games that are really violent and disturbing (ok, don't call the looney asylumn, i'm not crazy, i swear!)

Stand still while I shoot you in the face and we'll let the forum be the judge. :D

There will be mature games, but keep in mind this console is geared to everyone, not just the demographic that I am guessing that you fall into. This is being made for everyone, not just the mature audience. My belief that you will see a wide varity of games for everyone so yes you will see them, but I would not say anymore than the E or T games.

I can't find it right now, but in an interview, one of the Nintendo guys said that there will definitely be M-rated games for the Wii.
And there's always Killer 7 for the GC, and maybe a little Resident Evil action to tide you over while you wait. There's been rumors of GTA finally appearing on a Nintendo system as well.

FarCry is supposedly a launch title, so obviously yes. Come on, yakuza slicing people up with a sword, is that really aimed at kids at all?

Yes. Not first-party games, but they're definitely shooting for mature 3rd party games this time.

There were mature games for the gamecube. Just because a company has SOME child geared games doesnt mean that is the ONLY thing they have. I'm somewhat puzzled where this kind of thinking comes from.

because the gamecube and controller looked like a kids toy. that instantly branded nintendo as "for kiddies" unfortunately. At least, that's what I always get when people mention gamecube.

GTA being called a "mature" game makes as much sense as "military intelligence."

The Wii will probably carry a much larger percentage of children's games, simply because of the lower cost of the console and software production.

While the launch titles have a few Mature games, there are still a ton of games directed at children; many of which won't be released on the 360 or the PS3. For instance:

November:

Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy
Rayman: Raving Rabbids (360 next year)
Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz
Happy Feet
SpongeBob SquarePants: Creature From the Krusty Krab
Barnyard
Cars (also 360)

December:

Chicken Little: Ace In Action
Ice Age 2
The Ant Bully
Elebits
Open Season (Also 360)

So while the Wii will offer mature games, the majority of their opening catalog seems to be dominated with games for younger players. The "kiddie" stigma that plagued the Gamecube will probably continue with the Wii.

But who doesn't want to be a kid again? :)

Nintendo tends to focus on games for all ages, so it won't have as many exclusively mature titles. However, Mortal Kombat is hardly mature. The target audience is teenage boys...ie kids.

Rayman is definitely not a kids game. Monkey ball and elebits are arguable, but I wouldnt put it there.
