unless i am mistaken, you should be able to hook up your current monitor to a next gen console . . . they WILL support KB+mouse but it is unclear if it will be for [all] games.

my guess is that the consoles will BLOW AWAY the best PC gfx for at least a year - or two.

PC just doesn't have the games to show off its hardware . . . OTOH, there will be superb looking games almost immediately for the consoles.

i'm getting a "last" AGP card for my system - probably a 6800U or even a 7800/r520 series - this Fall to play "must have" PC titles. AT 10x7 i sould be "fine" for Unreal3 games a couple of more years while the console will be my primary gaming machine. 😉

Oh i never meant it would ONLY be used for gaming.

But if someone does say that the TV can be used for many other things. Ill just say so can my whole computer...

the difference is: i don't need to upgrade my computer for anything - other than games. 😉

Don't bet on it. The most well known shooter out there is probably, like it or not, Halo.

Now, all the GREAT FPS games will still be on the PC, that's for sure - Halo, in the grand scheme of shooters, was average, it was just that console players had never had a good shooter before.

And for God's sake, no one say Goldeneye. It was pants.

Racing and Sports and generally cute games will always beat out PC though.

All next gen consoles will have mouse and keyboard. Just use your USB mouse and keyboard from your current computer. Whether developers support it or not is another question.

Dreamcast had mouse and keyboard along with Quake, Unreal Tournament, Warcraft 2, etc. But the strength of the consoles lie with it's multiplayer capabilities on comfort of a living room couch. Console gaming is social activity with friends playing front of a big TV. PC gaming is usually single player experience with the user sitting by himself in front of a computer playing single player or multiplayer games on the internet.

PC's will always surpass consoles by the time the console is released to the public. The huge advantage consoles have is optimization. Consoles have raw power, which alot of it is untapped when the console is first released. I remember the first PS2 and Xbox games were so-so compared to PC games. Now you look at any 2005 title compared to a launch title and you'll laugh at how bad the launch title looks. Look at GT4 for the PS2, the graphics are amazing for such an old machine. Consoles are made for multiplayer games where you can all have fun in the same room or mulitple room like Xbox's system link. I like the PC because when there's no-one to play with, I can hop online and play for hours by myself. Xbox Live tried to copy the PC and it does well for some titles but the interface doesn't allow you enough freedom to browse every single online server like PC games.

DOA, which was an XBox launch title- still looks better then most PC games released today.

This is what a lot of people overlook when they talk about how PCs will overtake the next gen consoles. Of course they will eventually, thats a given. The real question should be how long before the graphics on PC Games catch up to those on next gen consoles?
For those of us who would rather game than benchmark, the knowledge that my top flight gaming rig is technically faster than my console doesn't do much for me when the console games offer far superior graphics. In the case of DOA the PC didn't see a game with graphics in that ballpark for YEARS

The PC game developers still have to code for the lowest common denominator. Console game devs don't have that problem.

Its simple as long as Consoles dont support a mouse then Consoles will never replace the PC in FPS.

Without a mouse games like Starcraft will never play right. You need speed and the mouse grants that.

The nice part about consoles is the games will be written with HD and Widescreen in mind but again without mouse I will be fine with 4:3

Racing will always be king on the console. same as sports, and other little fun games like Super Monkey Ball.
