Will the new Apple TV be a decent gaming console?

If Japan has one thing going, it is definitely the arcade scene. I think Arcades can make a comeback, and with connectivity to smartphones, could prove to be the next goldmine. The question, who wants to make that investment first?

As for AppleTV, they've nothing to offer the hardcore crowd, but if they went at it, could displace Nintendo entirely in the home console market, and for little additional outlay on Apple's part as the hardware is already out there anyway, and is capable enough for the job.

Casual gamers don't buy games. We saw this with the Wii. They sold a ton of Wiis but had horrible software sales compared to the 360 and ps3. Only the Mario and Zelda games etc had any real sales numbers and again casuals aren't buying those.

Yeah, I never bought many games for my Wii. Now it's in the kids room, where they use it to watch kids stuff like Peppa Pig on Youtube 🙂

No chance, pink pants.

The games that will run on Apple TV are meant to be played in short bursts on a phone. I don't think someone's going to want to sit at a TV for 2 hours and play Fallout Shelter, which is a very shallow, redundant game (basically, a typical phone game).

The only thing I can really see this working well for is emulation. If you DL a Game Boy emulator, you could totally flop down on the couch for a long session of Pokemon or something.

Apple TV is a separate platform. iPhone games won't work on it and vice versa.

I don't suspect that the Apple TV will amount to much in the way of gaming. I think that mostly falls on gaming seeming like a low focus for the device. You can only have a single remote connected, which means Wii style party games would require swapping the remote between players. The remote pretty much just includes that motion control and the touch pad when it comes to gaming.

You can use you phone as a controller. There are already multiplayer games in development for it.

It can work, but here's the thing... Nintendo tried that with the Wii U, and it didn't seem to gain them much traction. Do you see Apple getting much more? Maybe they'd do well if they tried to tap that fun party market? For example, Jackbox has a bunch of fun party games and you just need one central device to display the scores and such. The Apple TV could do that really well.
