Its no secret, General David Petraeus has future political ambitions. As far as an army career, he is basically as high as he can go. Four big stars, now newly promoted to overall control of both Iraq and Afghanistan, and face the facts, he is now expected to pull another rabbit out if his hat for Afghanistan.

And while I can certainly not speak for all liberal types, I do have a some respect for Petraeus almost totally missing in action from the rest of our armed forces. And as someone who does have perhaps the best counter insurgency thinking, Petraeus has a certain cred record in Iraq even though some of it may be falsely claimed, not by the General, but by GWB.

But now place yourself in Petraeus's shoes, he has political ambitions in 2010 or 2012, GWB is peeing in his soup regarding rational Afghan policy, if Petraeus follows GWB policy he will be a total failure in Afghanistan, and hence politically dead.

If Petraeus stalls for time until 1/20/2009, he has a chance of being picked up by either McCain or Obama, but if he allows GWB to dictate Afghan policy now, he is screwed.
