Will the Iraqi people *really* welcome US troops on their soil?

"Inshallah (God willing) we will be ready for war and if (U.S. President George W.) Bush is a hero, let him bring his soldiers to Iraq ... On the ground, it will be a different matter," he said.

An Iraqi political analyst, who requested anonymity, said that Iraqis arming themselves was an old cultural phenomenon. But he said it had recently increased with encouragement from Iraq's rulers.

After the Palestinian uprising broke out, Saddam formed a Jerusalem Army that Iraqi officials said attracted some 7 million volunteers. They received military training in camps across the country.

In addition to the Jerusalem Army, all members of the ruling Baath Party, estimated at 3 million, and tribes were also well armed. Guns have also been distributed to workers, farmers and student volunteers.

This could get ugly...

The article should have mentioned the Iraqi gentleman in the background of the interview crossing his throat with his finger.

"If you liked Vietnam, you're gonna love Iraq!"

I guess quotes like that are a quick shortcut to actually thinking

Oh dear god!!! This will surely be Vietnam IV.
Not quite what I was thinking...but you're getting there. Point is, the US seriously underestimated the morale of Viet Cong soldiers back in the day. It was assumed that by cutting off supply rations and effectively starving their troops, they would be able to get whole divisions to drop their arms and surrender. Not so.

Most of the analysts talking about our opposition in Iraq have assumed thus far that the small Republican Guard forces pose the greatest threat. But what about the threat of Civil War? EVEN IF its not uniform support for Saddam, things could get ugly with legions of Baath loyalists killing other Iraqis...with Americans caught in the crossfire.

Actually I think you mean a shortcut away from.

Don't worry about whether they'll be upset if they arrive (they really can't do anything) - worry about whether they'll politely ask you to take your army and leave afterwards. It seems some people have already decided Iraq will be a country sized military base for the US.

Our President has guaranteed we will be victorious . . . which means the US military will do WHATEVER it takes to secure Iraq. I'm sure it will be very easy to entice new recruits with the promise of an 8mo mandatory tour of duty in Iraq.

Yeah, but... the media says that all Iraqis hate Saddam Hussein and they are all just anxiously waiting for us to liberate them.

Wow, that must have been a reprint of the ones going around right before we went into Afghanistan saying exactly the same thing..........
