the AnandTech article about Harpertown covered
a lot of detail, i don't think i'm ready to take the
exam.

but one thing did stand out, you can get a Harpertown
Xeon, which i think is 45 nM generation silicon, that
consumes 80 watts, for about $310.

But that is socket 771. it's a beautiful motherboard,
but it's a big motherboard.

the Core2Quads are all 95 watts, i think.
no Harpertowns in the "Extreme" section, either.

Socket 771 Motherboard in a Small Form Factor <--- Big Seller, I think.

it's not right. in order to get the medium price killer Xeon
Quad Core, you have to buy a humongous motherboard.

Any Socket 775 parts will be Yorkfield. Give it a while, and they'll be price-competitive (at least) with the Socket 771 Xeons. I don't know the TDP numbers off hand.

Socket 771 is intended for servers and workstations. So Socket 771 motherboards don't cater to the SFF crowd, which is entirely a desktop phenomenon. There's no market there. They do cater to the server world's equivalent, 1U servers, but I think you'll find those setups to be price-prohibitive for us "normal" folks.
