my rig in sig plus one 3870 x2 and then a 2nd vanilla 3870 down the road.

i have 4 hard drives, an oc'd quad on 1.38v and 4 sticks of 1gb ram.

im gonna try to swap my 8800gts for a 3870x2 sometime soon, and then id like to know if before i add a single gpu 3870 to this if i have to sell my corsair and get something else.

If we use that as rough estimate, you'd be looking at 400w or more. The system was with a 790 FX mobo and a 2,6ghz qaudcore phenom. Pretty sure your rig will pull a little more though. The 620hx can handle it, but what's wisdom ? I'd say you'd be cutting it a little close. Those power draws are in BioShock, other reviews showed Crysis to be more demanding, with higher powerdraws, and those 400w could easily become 500w in Crysis. Add up the fact that your rig probably draws more power then the rig AT used, and I'd say you'd want a 700-800w PSU. These are 'guesstimates' though, don't take them to be 100% correct.
 
And something WAY less expensive, like a etasis 850w unit which would easily handle what he wants to run. Plenty more units to pick from, but I'm not sure if he's looking for recommendations ?
 
if i have to get another one i would take recommendations, but it may alter my upgrade path because it is quite an extra expense. depending on the resale value of my hx620 really.

i enjoy the quiet work the corsair i have does for sure. i dont believe in overkill either. though now i wish i went with overkill on my ps a year ago 😀
 
i'd get the PCPC Silencer 750 for that setup, unless something's changed about PCPC in the past 6 months or so where i haven't kept up with PSU's

Yeah, we'll never see an AMD T'bird or P4 Northwood being the equal of a 641/2 Mustang. Technology always depreciates.

True, but some of the really old stuff is worth something. I think that same rule applies to cars. Most mass market things will always depreciate, but one of a kind or rare items from the past are more special. Either way back on topic, I'd expect a corsair psu to have better resale value than most...but we're still talking a major drop at minimum.

It will run them. However, I personally prefer a bit more comfort room as at a full load you'll be well over 65% of the PSUs capability. I'd get a larger unit for 3870s in Crossfire such as our TX-750.

a friend has been runnin two 8800 gt's in sli with a quad oc'd to 3.0 so far so good for a month with the 620hx and the power draw is similar, i was wonderin if he was damaging his PS

i will be runnin one 3870 for awhile but it is possible i will try crossfire before summer comes if a game comes out that makes me need it - but most likely i will just wait until fall and buy the next best one card solution and i know the corsair will hack that for sure.

and oh yeah. very cool to have a corsair rep check in more often than not. definitely will make me prioritize a corsair product next time i upgrade something if the price/performance/quality ratio is there.
 
how often do you game? 5%, maybe 10% of the time? You should be fine with that 620, even with a 3870x2 and a 3870 combined. The hx620 will easily handle its rated power draw, and in reality does better than many higher-rated units. As an example, it has 2 6 pin pci-e connectors and 2 6+2 pin connectors, allowing you to run 2 3870x2's, 2900xt's, 8800gtx's, etc. Now your oc'd quad will definitely draw some major power, but at the least I would recommend that you go for your desired gpu upgrade path and then upgrade the psu only if necessary.
