I posted this over at a Forester forum but no one has answered this question in over a weeks time still.

So it's a long shot but does anyone here know the answer?

According to Subaru's site, they state...

Will the iPod interface work with my iPhone? iPod functionality of the iPhone is supported, however the 3G version has not yet been validated for compatibility. The iPhone will not be turned off by the iPod interface when the vehicle's ignition is cycled off.

Which was taken from here: Subaru Audio - iPod Interface

I've heard all sorts of conflicting answer so far on this question from different sites and even different dealers.

The sales man I bought my Forester from told me it would not work with the iPhone at all, other forums have said the 2G does but nothing about the 3G.

I have a friend that claims he read that it will work in the sense that I can control the iPod functions of the iPhone with the steering wheel controls and radio controls without issue but that it won't charge it. Of course when I asked him to send me the link on that, he could no longer find it.

So I'm now looking for the 100% definitive answer once and for all, will the factory offered OEM iPod cable for the 2009 Forester single disc headunit/receiver/radio work with the 3G iPhone?

And if the answer is "yes" then a follow up question is.

Which cable/kit should I get?

There are currently 2 part numbers for the ipod interface.

H621SFG501

or

H621SSC200

Or some other part number all together?

Should play music but not charge (if it does not specifically work for 3G)

The main reason behind not being able to charge is that the newest gen ipods/nano/iphone3g removed firewire charging pins which most adaptors used.

I have a USA Spec adaptor for my car, which works with iPhone 2G (music + charge) but 3G works only via music. They did however release an additional cable replacement which works for 3G charge + music.

Use the one ending in 200 if you have a 6-disc or nav unit. The other if you have a single disc player.
