Will swithcing to a Wireless N adapater matter on a Wireless G router?

Hey gang,

So my local Meijer is having a blow-out clearance on Netgear USB Wireless N adapters.

We use a Buffalo Wireless G router.

My brother bought one for his PC (across the hall from mine) and claims that his speed and signal strength has improved greatly.

My question is, is that possible? Will there be any benefits from using a Wireless N adapter when using a G router?

Thanks!

I switched from a g wireless PCI adapter to a Trendnet mini wireless N USB Adapter, backward compatible to g. It was on sale for $11.99 AR shipped. I have a Westell 327W wireless g modem/router.

Did my signal strength improve? Yes, but due to the fact that the 2dBi antenna on the g wireless PCI adapter was on the back of my HTPC case and the signal was being blocked by the case and my TV stand. The Trendnet wireless N USB adapter is plugged into a USB port on the front of the case.

I think a good analogy here is buying a Ferrari as replacement for oh I dont know a Subaru. Yes it is quicker but in the end you still have the speed limits on the road to slow you down.

Your signal strength should improve but the speed won't go up that much. The router is limited to the 54mpbs 802.11g provides and that is that. The better signal strength should improve the maximum speed you can get out of it that's all.

There was a nice chart when I did this in college. Basically, 802.11g guarantees 54mbps only if the distance between nodes is less than two meters.
