Will Stern signing on Sirius make the company sink or swim?

Stern signed on for $500 million over 5 years time. Sirius said that in order to pay for the deal they'll need 1,000,000 new subscribers. Stern is supposed to have about 10,000,000 listeners.

Does he have enough of a following to bring that many new people over to the world of paid satellite radio?

Will his show loose it's appeal because it's now longer a game of "how far can he go?". He can do whatever he wants. Nobody can fine him. Nobody can drop him from syndication.

Good, bad, indifferent?

Good or indifferent.

If ppl don't like Stern, they simply won't listen to him. Consumers won't be all:

"OHH NOESSS!! STERN IS ON SERISUIS I REFUSE OTI SUBSCRIBE"

See now. I dont think howard makes $100mill a year. Even listen to him when he talks he says he doesnt make that much money

Probably al ot of that goes to fines and such to the FCC.
He's definitely entertaining to listen to.

I think I read that he will be moving to Sirius in 2006. That gives Sirius a ton of time to advertise, and also gives Stern a long time to plug Sirius on his show for the move. I already own Sirius, but I don't like stern, so it won't be doing me any good. OutQ ownz all!

It's not going to the FCC. I'm sure he's talking down the amount of money that he makes so he doesn't have to pay so much alimony to his ex (Allison).

That's why you always need them to sign a Pre-Nup.

That's a goddamn lot of money, have there ever been any contracts in that range?

Unless it was a blunder on CNN's part, that's what they said.

Their webpage just says
"Stern announced Wednesday that he'll join Sirius Satellite Radio in January 2006 in what is being billed as a five-year, multimillion dollar contract.

Stern is a chump who likes to con his listeners into believing his is trying to "stand up" to the government or bitching about how the FCC is trying to shut him down when in reality he'll go to the highest bidder and will simply retire when it is convenient for him in an attempt to make himself a martyr.

that same article you linked says this..

But luring Stern was a major, if costly, move for Sirius. The "Howard Stern Show" costs about $100 million a year, including salaries for Stern and his staff, according to Sirius data.

so 5 years is $500million

No way in hell is Stern getting 500 Mil over 5yrs

Thats more money than Letterman makes and we all know Letterman brings more revenue to CBS than Stern to Viacom. Letterman = $32M/yr

Stern might, and thats a big might, get $10M/yr.

But then again who the hell am I to argue with a Press Release?
http://biz.yahoo.com/rb/041006/media_sirius_8.html

And of course, is Stern going to rely heavily on advertising $'s or is Sirius going to go commercial free?

Sirius said it would spend $100 million per year toward Stern's broadcast, which includes $80 million for the salaries of Stern and his staff as well as other production costs, and the rest in stock-based compensation. Sirius declined to give details on how the stock will be awarded.

What would make this a SMASH is if streaming video is ever a full go ahead.

Uncensored streaming video of his shows would be grand slam as far as subscribers go.
