Will static images damage an iPad screen?

I wouldn't worry about it. If it's the new iPad, you have 11 months to burn that screen under warranty.
Enjoy the thing the way you want.

I'm sure any burn in would probably be temporary if you managed to leave it on a static image for a few hours.

Well, I pretty much intend on leaving the Radio Alarm Clock HD app on all the time (great app btw). No point turning it off because the stand auto-charges while docked. Although the auto-dimming comes on after a few mins, and that should mitigate any burn-in issues I have. (Is there a way to turn off the stupid auto-dimming btw?)

The stand with the remote is really cool and it works really well. The speakers in it aren't all that great at high levels but it rotates and essentially I have a nice little entertainment center for $65.

The iPad 1 and 2 were very susceptible to burn in, by the way. I have managed to burn the image of the on-screen keyboard in after a few months, and obviously I won't have the on-screen keyboard appear a lot.

Hopefully the new screen tech of the iPad 3 will be better, but I somewhat doubt it.

Have you ever seen the status bar burned in on an iPhone? I think that answers your question.

iPhone and iPad are two very different devices. One has a bigger screen than the other, for one, and the area being burned by the backlight on the iPad is also drastically different than the same area on the iPhone.

Even better test, have you seen an iPad display at an Apple store with burn in?

Yes. Open to a gray background and look for an impression of the on-screen keyboard. It's common after the iPad has been running at max brightness for just a short period of time..
