Will Sony open the UMD format?

My question to you is as the title says: Will Sony open the UMD format?

Recent Sony stuff would indicate that they will as soon as the popularity of the format reaches zero (Minidisc anyone?). But with the release of a device they tout as a portable gaming-video-music-and-photo device (PSP), will they release anything that consumers can use aka. a burner?

I think that Sony, realizing the fact that no one will buy a 4gb memory stick for $900, will sell an external UMD burner. They'll add a super-duper copyright protection to all the games that are going to be sold that can only be added on during the stamping at the factories, then we'll be able to buy $10 UMDs and the $200 burner and enjoy high quality video and audio on our PSPs. Eventually, they'll make MP3 players and video players that will take advantage of the size and low cost of the discs and create a great platform that will make them lots of money.

Wishful thinking? What do you think?

The whole reason sony even started using UMD was to combat piracy. They could have used other formats.

Releasing a burner wouldn't be in their best interests.
