Will someone eventually find a cure or vaccine to SARS?

Will it happen? I'm sure they have billions of dollars at their expense that could go and is probably going into figuring out a cure and or vaccine for SARS.

What's your take?

yes, there will be both cure and vaccine in the near future. every pharmaceutical company (mine being one of them) is involved somehow, whether working on screening, treatment, or a vaccine.

Thats what I think will happen eventually. There are so many things they have never found a cure for what makes you believe that they'll find a cure for sars.

It depends, there still is not a vaccine for HIV and other viruses, even the common cold. One reason can be such as with the cold is that there are many different varients and it would be nearly impossible to be vaccinated for every single one.

that's what the Chinese government said last November, when they heard of the outbreak. boy, were they wrong.

if every patient is quarantined and treated, it will run its course and go away. but that seems to be the hardest part.

What happened to Sheselectric? her dad invented the cure for AIDs, i'm sure he could whip up the cure for SARS if someone only told him they needed one.

Don't think they will find a vaccine anytime soon... read an article a couple of days ago saying that the SARS virus is mutating at a VERY fast rate... That makes creating a vaccine for it very difficult...

Medicine has been working on HIV for years and so have we have palliative treatment. Probably will never have a CURE but maybe eventually a vaccine that has limitations. SARS is similar in that it is a virus so a Cure is not likely. A vaccine is more probable but not anytime soon. Consider this: if a vaccine for SARS is discovered today. It will not be approved for treatment in the US for 3-4 years if it is fast tracked. The only way you will get to use it is if you are involved in the clinical trials.
Of course this is with our current state of science and understanding of viruses. A fundamental change in the understanding of the complexities of a virus could lead to a medical revolution analogous to what penicillin did for bacterial diseases. I wouldn't hold much hope for the near future.

You do have some valid points. However, just from Pfizer's extensive compound library, an effective treatment (a cure) can be discovered any day, as long as the compounds can be screened fast enough. As for clinical trials, one could be started right away on patients in countries where death rate has been relatively high, in Hong Kong for instance. As long as the patients agree to it, an experimental study (clinical trial) can be put together in a hurry. Virus in general does mutate, and some strains mutate faster than others. Although flu virus does mutate from year to year, and that's why flu vaccine shots are different every year, the point is that vaccines can be developed for viruses that do mutate. I am hopeful about the progress in general though. Even with the HIV you mentioned, there are many protease inhibitors out there which are very effective. For instance, Pfizer's Viracept is probably the most effective treatment against HIV infection, and most patients are tested "HIV negative" in subsequent tests while being on the treatment.

The media hype about SARS is worse than SARS itself. People seem to think it's going to destroy humanity or something, when in reality, it's honestly not that big of a deal. Even political leaders of major countries have made statements saying that the hype about SARS is much worse than what it's actually doing to people.
