They're not just removing a pin either... Slaimus seems to think they're just taking a pin off the bottom of the CPU and calling it a different CPU... and it's not that simple. The CPU is being designed differently than the FX51, and I bet just by coincidence, the pincount comes to 939 instead of 940 like the Opteron and FX51.

Also will 939 be the standard socket for A64 or only FXs? if it is for the 64, then that means future 64s will be dual channel. Dual channel + 256k cache is a far better solution than single channel + 1mb cache since it saves them a lot of money and improve yields.

According to this article, apprently that's going to happen. 939 will be the "stable" socket for all future hammer chips. A64 will be 512k dual channel, A64-FX will be 1mb dual channel, and AXP will be 512k single channel.

(When I say stable, I mean one that will require the least number of motherboard changes [preferably no changes] in the next 3-4 years)

I duobt you'll find that anywhere. The longest you'll get is 1-2 years before a significant change occurs...better chipsets are released all the time throughout the life of a line of processors.

For example, the socket A platform has been around for a few years now, but it was originally a 100mhz FSB, AGP 4x, ATA100, USB 1.1, and the option of SDR or DDR memory. Current socket A boards run at up to 200mhz FSB with AGP 8x, ATA133 & SATA, USB 2.0, not to mention the increased stability and features of the final chipset (nForce 2).

Sure, you could keep a board for 2-3 years, but I'm sure you'll be missing out on many better chipsets that will come as the A64's mature.

SH*T, did he say he wants to buy a board that will last him 4 years? He's obviously a newbie, because I seem to replace my motherboard in my system bi-monthly! Oh well, Samsonid, go ahead and hold your breath... It's impossible to hurt yourself, because once you pass out, you'll start breathing again!
