I am giving my brother my old s754 sempron 3000+ rig. It works fine but it's extra and he has an axp 2400+ so i though id upgrade him. Id like to salvage the gig of pc2700 ram he's using. Is his possible??

Also will this cpu or any of the 939 cpus work with pc2100?? I have a couple of gigs sitting here that Id like to use in something.

Yes and yes. 1st-generation K8 (sockets 754, 939, 940) support all RAM speeds from PC1600 to PC3200, aka DDR-200 to DDR-400, aka 100 to 200 MHz actual RAM clock operation.

The board's BIOS should detect the RAM properly, and will choose the appropriate divider (down from CPU core clock) to run the RAM at or below its rated speed.

For example, the socket-754 Sempron 3000+, being an 1800 MHz CPU, will run the PC2700 RAM (rated clock 166 MHz) at 1800/11 = 163 MHz.

Peter,

Somehow you always manage to answer my questions quick - you must live here ;)
I suspected that was right, but i was not completely sure.

So tell me this. Could I mix and match? i.e 1 GB of 2100 and 1 gB of 2700. The CPU shold run at the lower speed for both but in the end he would still have 2 GBs right?

Never had a problem running DDR333 and DDR400 on the same board. It just all ran at DDR333 clock speed.

... which is exactly what's going to happen. There is no "mixed" /operating/ speed just because DIMMs are /rated/ for different top speeds. You'll just get the best common speed supported by all DIMMs. Since DDR defines the minimum speed at a static 83 MHz, running DDR DIMMs slower than their individual rating is no problem either.

Knight, thanks for the flowers :) Usually, I just appear to be first because I'm in a completely different time zone. (Nice trick, eh?)

Thank You guys for the help. I figured that top be the case on the RAM, but I like getting second opinions ;)

This is also a great way to get rid of some pretty good (but surplus equipment ) My brother will have made out better eith way. I was either going to give him the sempron board above, or I do have an Athlon XP 3200 and board Im not using anymore. I figured that in the long run the sempron would be a little bit better for him.
