Friends of Tom Cruise like Jennifer Lopez and David Beckham and Will Smith say that, despite his affinity for scientology, he would never pressure them to join the infamous Hollywood cult. But today, the New York Daily News says Smith has done just that. Seemingly.

Will Smith has joined the ranks of Hollywood power players actively recruiting for the Church of Scientology.
Big stars traditionally distribute "wrap presents" to crew members after completing a film. His recent gift after wrapping next summer's comedy "Hancock" was a card good for a personality test at your local Scientology center.
Never mind that such tests are given free by the church anyway. The quiz is designed to convert people to the religion by identifying personality flaws that - surprise! - Scientology can fix right up for you.
Smith, who is best buddies with Scientology booster Tom Cruise, has never confirmed that he joined the church. But he told "Access Hollywood" last month: "I was introduced to it by Tom, and I'm a student of world religion. I was raised in a Baptist household. I went to a Catholic school, but the ideas of the Bible are 98% the same ideas of Scientology, 98% the same ideas of Hinduism and Buddhism."

I don't have a bible in front of me, but I'm pretty sure that's not true. I went to catholic school too and I remember very little about alien wars and evil galactic rulers. Or maybe that's why all the cool guys did so well in religion class, while I was getting a hand job in the library from their girlfriends. Golly, I really missed out.

Too bad. I liked him a lot as an actor, and probably still will, but now this will always be at the back of my mind when I see one of his movies.

Out of all the religions/cults/whatever, I believe that the morals and beliefs of the Church of Satan best meets humankind's way of thinking and doing things in this world.

The Nine Satanic Statements

The Nine Satanic Statements are to outline what Satan within the Church of Satan Symbolizes. They are:

1. Satan represents indulgence instead of abstinence!
2. Satan represents vital existence instead of spiritual pipe dreams!
3. Satan represents undefiled wisdom instead of hypocritical self-deceit!
4. Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it instead of love wasted on ingrates!
5. Satan represents vengeance instead of turning the other cheek!
6. Satan represents responsibility to the responsible instead of concern for psychic vampires!
7. Satan represents man as just another animal, sometimes better, more often worse than those that walk on all-fours, who, because of his ?divine spiritual and intellectual development,? has become the most vicious animal of all!
8. Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification!
9. Satan has been the best friend the Church has ever had, as he has kept it in business all these years!

[edit] The Nine Satanic Sins

1. Stupidity
2. Pretentiousness
3. Solipsism
4. Self-deceit
5. Herd Conformity
6. Lack of Perspective
7. Forgetfulness of Past Orthodoxies
8. Counterproductive Pride
9. Lack of Aesthetics

[edit] The Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth

1. Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.
2. Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.
3. When in another?s lair, show him respect or else do not go there.
4. If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat him cruelly and without mercy.
5. Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.
6. Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and he cries out to be relieved.
7. Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.
8. Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.
9. Do not harm little children.
10. Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.
11. When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him.

The reason scientology is so successful for very rich and successful people is that it basically says you are in control of your life, success and everything in your personality. So people that have become stars can better say that they did it all on their own.

Wow... just wow. Have they ever conned him.

actually, the ideas ARE pretty much the same, the words and stories written are just different. The meaning and ideas behind each story tend to represent the same things. Most of the same religions share the same beginnings, when interpreting the general idea of the stories in the bibles of assorted language.

I am beginning to think, based on the sheer ludicrousness of the stories within Scientology.. that this is a ploy by all these famous folk. Why? Hell.. why not? I think a lot of these people are actually simply atheists, and want to join a new religion that basically mocks all the other religions. I doubt the creator of Scientology believes a single word he wrote, and I think made the writings so ludicrous to prove some kind of point. I mean, when the thing basically says it was a plane that 'looks like a DC9 with space-capable jet engines', that begs to be laughed at. I think this is a way of saying 'religion is retarded: grow up people, and move on.' Again, I am really beginning to think people like Tom Cruise and Will Smith are smarter than to believe what is essentially an older version of the Flying Spaghetti Monster in terms of pure bullshit for the sake of being bullshit. Now, I can be wrong: many actors and actresses have been idiots, but sometimes I think they are merely attaching their name to the list of followers, to give the movement some legs.

-edit-
and as far as respect for Smith goes: my respect hasn't changed a bit. Why? Because personal beliefs and personal life are two things I couldn't care less about in an actor/actress. Why? Because it has absolutely no impact on their ability or lack of ability to act. I am not a big fan of Cruise in acting, but some movies he has surprised me in. And I look forward to Valkyrie for that very reason: he may just shine in that movie. I also generally love Smith's acting, and look forward to most movies I see that he stars in.
If Smith can act good in a movie I like (or may like, in the case of upcoming films), then so be it.

I saw Will totally deny this not too long ago on TV access hollywood or something. He said his grandmother would roll over in her grave if he was anything other than a baptist or something like that... Just rumors basically.

It's a tax break for the rich as someone already mentioned. Who doesn't want to be taxed less based upon some stupid fake-cult?
