Its prolly been covered a million times but i have a 4x NEC 1300a. Im wondering if its possible when dual layer burners come out to upgrade the firmware or something in my burner in order to burn duel layer

it wont be able to burn dual-format discs.... but there is a good chance it will be able to read them

as you probably already know current commercial dvd's are usually dual layer (pressed), and all kinds of dvd-/+ rw drives can read them. but from what i understand some of those same players will be unable to read dual layer (burned) discs

Yea what im asking is just that will the current DVD writers be able to burn dual layer dvds with a firmware upgrade. Is it even possible

hard to say really, I have heard rumors that pioneer drives may be able to burn dual layerd media, but no solid evidence

Yea. I mean how is dual layed burned. Im guessing the intersity of the layer is either increased or decreased to burn a second layer. If thats the case should a piece if siftware be able to adjust the lasor strength on current burners letting them burn double layer

To burn two layers, besides the proper firmware (duh) you need a drive that's capable of focusing within the proper specs to both layers and to have a laser powerful enough to burn the second layer (it takes more power to burn to the second layer than the first one). If a DVD drive had these hardware capabilities then it would simply require a firmware upgrade. But good luck finding out detailed specs on just what hardware capabilities are required for dual-layer burning and what hardware capabilities your particular DVD burner has.

the answer is NO
within the realm of reason with 99% surety it will not be able to.
It has been discussed before...
Also not to mention the fact that the manufacturers DO NOT want this... they want you to buy a new burner...

Dual format burners use a lens to focus the writing laser on the second layer. Since current DVD burners only have this lens for reading, there is absolutely, positively, no way this could be achieved.

That's not true, pioneer burned a DUAL LAYER DVD using a pioneer 106 (A06) and the only thing they modified was the firmware.

So on current hardware it may be possible but we will probably never see it happen, why would they give out a firmware update for free when they can get you to buy a new drive. ;)

Actually, it is true.

I would suggest that this burner was designed with the focal lens as a dual format burner and then released as a premature single layer burner first. It's still a dual layer burner though, apparently.

That was never official confirmed and Pioneer has later told a popular German magazine that there in fact was hardware changes too. See doom9 news 2/5 here. In either case I think you can forget that you will see a dual layer firmware update to any DVD writer for economical reasons and especially not to old 4x writers that hardly even have the requested laser power for reliable dual layer burning.
