Will running a registered/ecc dimm with the 8KHA+ cause problems?

I just put my pc together this weekend (8KHA+ and XP 1800.) I am having trouble installing an OS though. My old Win2K partition is still on there so I was able to boot into it via safe mode. Normal gives me a BSOD.

Installing the new OS also gives me a BSOD. 90% of the time it will freeze at starting Win2K (this is during the initial phase when it has just scanned the system and is before the point where is it getting ready to select a partition to format/install. The other 10% of the time when it gets past that screen it goes to BSOD instantly.

I bought these DIMMS about 5 months ago when I planned to buy something like a Tyan Tiger 760MP but I bunked that idea.

The mobo came with the latest non-beta bios (not a big fan of beta testing a bios) so I doubt thats the problem. I have tried installing on 2 different HDDs with a SCSI CD-rom as well as an IDE one so I doubt it could be a problem with the controller. Anyone know if the memory might be causing these problems? I always assumed that since the memory is ECC/registered then it just meant that I could just leave those features disabled.

Forgot to ask that is this just a problem with certain motherboards?

ie if I order the MSI nForce mobo will I come into the same problems and order non-registered ram?

No, running ecc ram won't hurt your mobo. It doesn't support ecc, and therefor is a waste on your board, but will run with it, just acts like it isn't there. One of my sticks is ecc as initially I thought the board supported it. When I found out it didn't, got a second stick of non-ecc and the pair are currently oc'd to 154fsb.

As for your problem, try backing the jumper on the board to 100fsb and try again. If it boots, I'd suspect your psu wasn't powerful enough to handle the higher voltage requirments of 133fsb.

I know it's not the 8KHA+, but I have registered ECC 256MB PC2100's in my 8K7A. I too had similar aspirations for a 760MP, but the performance just wasn't there for what I do.

Hope you get your problem resolved.
