Will ripping DVD's with DVD Burner shorten lifespan?

I was lucky enough to get in on the OM $69 out the door DVD+-RW deal. For backing up DVD's, is it better to use a regular dvd drive to reduce wear on the DVD burner, or should it not really matter at all?

I'm sure it would be better to rip with a cheap dvd drive, as it will slow down the wear and tear on the dvdrw.. but by the time the drive dies, it would most likely need to be replaced anyways

Any use will cut from it's useable life.

I ripped ~1000 CD's with my first LiteOn DVD drive (not a burner) before it died. I have since replaced it with another LiteOn (CDRW/DVD combo). I do all my ripping (CD and DVD) with that drive, & use my Plextor 708A only for DVD burning.

Why would I bother putting excess wear & tear on my $180 Plextor when I have a $35 LiteOn that's faster?

heh yeah my problem is that I don't HAVE a regular DVD drive, so if I wanted to use one to rip I'd probably go get a $25 OEM one from Newegg, which is the same price I paid for my DVD drive AR. Why didn't I pick up more then one :(

Yes, I recommend that you pick up a cheap DVD-ROM just for ripping purposes.

Personally, I use a Toshiba 12X (I think), and a Pioneer 107D for burning only.

I wouldn't have bought a drive dedicated to ripping. At the price you paid ($69) for the DVD burner, you could likely buy another one for the same price you paid for the CDRW/DVD drive when your DVD burner goes kaput.

heh the price is actally $69 OTD plus $50 MIR, so around $25 after tax total. I canceled the order, seeing as how I was about to pay 2x for a CD-RW/DVD then what I just paid for my DVD/CDRW/DVD. I'm guessing that by the time this thing goes kaput I can probably just get another DVD burner for around the same price as a current cd-rw/dvd combo thx to hot deals.
