Will "pushing" your cdrom tray closed damage it?

I usually push it, sometimes use the button.

I just think it's so pesky to have to keep removing my coffee cup from the holder every time I want to use a CD

I like to go to My computer and do a right click on my drive, then use the eject or close option. That way no physical pressure will be applied to the drive.










Na most of the time I just push.

I use the nudge method, hasn't seemed to have caused a problem yet.

i use to just push my old cheap cd rom shut but now that i got a 200 buck writer i dont take any chances...whats teh big deal of reaching 5 inches more to get off your fat dumps, its not like you have to walk a mile just to push the button like 10 years ago


i also think they should put the button on the top of the part that slides out because most people have their towers on the ground....am i right or not?

some are designed to be able to be pushed shut, others are not. If a very light push doesnt make it close, use the button. You can hear it when you force it, it will rev the tray's motor higher than normal. That will eventually destroy the motor or the tracks.

Pushing is an art; you have to have just the right touch, just the right angle etc. Some people know how to push, others do not. The folk who broke their drives do not know the fine art of pushing. Buttons are for amateurs. Pushing is for those who can.

I always use the button to open/close the tray. This is from my Plextor 12/10/32 scsi drive manual:

Like any other schizophrenic on this board, I use the button (ok so I'm &quot;only&quot; paranoid!)

Can anyone answer me this question? Drive manufacturers like Plextor obviously would rather have you use the button. But why the heck is that button below the friggin' tray, where you have to chance BREAKING that tray to reach under it for the button??@#!

I push it if I'm feeling lazy or if my computer is pissing me off or if I've had to change CD's for the nth time in the last 10 minutes. If I'm using some software that opens and closes the drawer for you then I always use that (no matter how long the delay is). The idea that clicking on some pixels on the screen makes something physical happen in the real world never fails to make me smile and reminds me why I like technology.

I always push the button Just something else funny about cd-roms. I work at wal-mart and I saw a man buying a creative labs 52x cdrom and I just laughed because I knew it was junk. A couple days later I see it a return bin with a defect tag. The exact words were &quot;it bumps and grinds&quot;. LMFAO

It really depends on where you have your case. I have my case, Antec SX1030B, right next to my monitor, so it's very easy for me to push the button. If the button was on top then it would be harder for me to push. My situation is the exact opposite of yours Leo V.

For me it depends on the drive. Some I push, some I use the button. I have not seen pushing do any damage.
