Will PSU wires short my board?

So I'm working on cable management and I'm thinking of wiring some cables behind my motherboard (in the space where the copper standouts sit)... but I notice there are metal pins there.

Can I rout some PSU cables in that area?

I wouldn't.
You could probably get away with it, but there are often sharp points on the bottom of a motherboard and the chance that they might push through the wiring insulation, just isn't worth the risk.

So if you have a PSU mounted below your motherboard, how do you connect your 4 pin ATX cable?

if the cable isn't long enough, you'll have to buy an extension like this.. I had to get one for my 8 pin for my enermax infiniti.

There is no problem routing cables between the motherboard and motherboard tray. People do it all the time. the cables have more then enough insulation on them to keep the prongs at the bottom of the board from puncturing the cable. You can even cover the area the cable will be running threw with some electrical tape to further insulate it. Now the 20/24 pin main cable is a bit too thick to fit but the P4 and other connectors can be routed back there. Now its much better to punch some holes threw the motherboard tray and run the cables back there but your original idea works just as well. Another way to rout the cable to the P4 connector is to just run it along the top of the motherboard. There is a nice little space between the back of the PCI/Video cards and the back plate of the case that the cable will fit threw. This holds the cable right up against the board and keeps you from having to stretch it over the cards. But once again your best bet is to perform a mod similar to the one in the link below.

Like mpilch said, it can and is done. Of course, depending upon the style of wiring.....that'd make quite a difference, too. I'd be more willing to try it with the flat-style wires from, say, a Corsair or Ultra X power supply, than the round bundled ones from like a CoolerMaster Real Power Pro or the like.
