Will Probably get a GTX280

A 700W PSU will be more than enough for a single GTX 280.

Since that PSU has a 8-pin PCI-e connector, you won't have to mess with adapters either.
 
You'll be just fine. You sure about that gtx280 though, why not wait for the HD4870 in 2 weeks-ish ? It might lower prices of the gtx280, or it might be so much cheaper that you'd rather get a HD4870 instead.

Or, why not 2 HD4850's for $150 each at bestbuy ? Not sure if it's still $150 though, but even for $200 2 of them cost considerably less then a GTX280 for 650$
 
I'd also wait for 4870, if nothing else to just see what that does to gtx 280 prices.

I have owned SLI & Crossfire. I didn't like either because when things didn't work it was frustrating.

I like the 1GB ram because I like to crank up AA.
It could also makes it practical to have AA+Vsync+Triple Buffering enabled 24/7 (AFAIK).

Why no AMD? I believe NVIDIA to have better AA, AF

You 'believe' nvidia to have better AA, AF ? Have you checked any of the recent reviews ? HD4850 kills a 9800gtx when the AA goes from 4xAA to 8xAA. You should wait for the HD4870, worst it can possibly do for you is lower the GTX280's price. Or well, worst it could do is perform at 80-90% of the gtx280 for 50% of the price, with what you believe to be inferior AA, AF 😛

Price is always an issue, of course. It is the reason I haven't alreay pulled the trigger. Since I always intend to use AA: If AMD cards do better than Nvidia w/ AA to the point that the performance gap is reduced (4870 VS GTX280) then I would consider it on price/performance.

I don't know what significant changes have been made to the latest AMD cards on IQ but if they are identical to the HD2900XT type cards, then NVIDIA>AMD on IQ.

I've long forgotten where I found this info but if you have some in memory that prove the opposite, I'd like to see them. After all, $350 is better than $650
 
My TP Quattro 850W runs a single GTX 280W without a hitch. If your PSU has a 8-pin PCI-E native you should be in good shape. I'd agree at this point it wouldn't hurt to wait 2-3 days for 4870 benches. Even if you don't buy the 4870, it might drop GTX 280 into the $550-600 price range. I understand about the 1GB thing though, that might take a while to pop up on a 4870 although I do think we'll see it once GDDR5 supply picks up. If you were dead set on buying this week, I'd check out the 25% Live Rebate over in Hot Deals. If you buy from Mwave (Multiwavevideo) you'll still get warranty coverage.

Hey, thanks for the MWAVE heads-up.

I will wait for the 4870 to roll out -- I have been planning to. I hope it makes an impact on GTX280 pricing (positive? 😛) but I just wanted to get the PSU requirement Q's out of the way 🙂
 
In all the reviews I've seen where IQ got compared between r670 and g80/g92 there was't any real perceptible difference. In fact, somtimes Nvidia got bashed for clearly inferior IQ in Crysis, this happened when new drivers got released which improved performance out of the blue. Not sure what happened with this though, but nonetheless, I'd dare say IQ is roughly equal between the two, and if you value lots of AA then the HD4870 might actually prove to be very competetive. Wise decision to wait for the HD4870 🙂
