Will probably be getting a job offer(s)

May be getting an interesting job offer.

I went out to dinner with my dad a few weeks ago. My step-mom was out of town, and he had just got back from a Jazz Festival. He said some of his friends would be meeting him up there.

I met my dad, we had a few drinks, and then his friends started showing up. The guy that sits next to me is the husband of a good friend of my step-mom's. I had a huge crush on the guy's daughter in high school. And ironically, I saw her at a big business convention the week before, the first time I saw her in almost 10 years.

Anyway, we start talking and the guy asks me what I do. I tell him I currently did sales for a webhosting company, but previously I was a data center tech. I told him some other experiences I had too and what my interests were. I really want to get into facility management, since on my days as a tech I worked solo looking over an entire datacenter and had to not only deal with servers, but networking, hvac, etc.

He goes on to tell me that he recently took a job as a Senior VP of datacenter operations for a huge corporation, and he was going to need to hire some people. And that it is going to be management level positions. He even want as far to say "can i hire you now? i dread the interviewing process and you are more than qualified and I trust your dad."

I currently make $30,000 per year salary, plus about $500-$1,500 per month in commissions (some month's can be up to $8,000 in coms, but not usually). All in all, job nets about $55k per year, and it's easy to me. Stress free. However, I do have some debts with my parents totally about $20k, plus I have about $6,000 in debt.

Two of the jobs he knows he has to hire for are

1. Managing a datacenter in Atlanta. It's a small, 12,000 square foot datacenter. Has tech support staff, I have access to engineers, etc. He said he needs someone comfortable with datacenters, not necessarily a know it all. Pay would be about $78,000 per year, plus benefits. I live in St. Louis and would have to move there, and he said they would buy me out of my apartment lease and pay moving costs.

2. Inspecting datacenters around the globe. They have about 20 site's around the world, from Hong Kong to London, Amsterdam, Singapore, Paris, etc. I would be based out of St. Louis and would essentially be gone for 2 weeks, back for 1, gone for 2 weeks, back for 1, etc.. Job would pay about $65,000 per year, and would pay for all travel costs, food, etc. I would just show up to these datacenters, and essentially go over policy, procedure, and the state of operations.

This is what was discussed at dinner. He didn't have any cards, nor did I, and he said as soon as he was ready to discuss something he would just call my dad and give him his info. Well yesterday, my dad called, gave me this guy's email address, and said he wanted to sit down and talk. I emailed him today, and we've since setup a lunch meeting for tomorrow.

Which job would you be most interested in? I kind of like the idea of traveling and keeping my home town as home base (being back for 2 weeks at a time), but I could also use the extra $10k per month salary. I do think I would spend less living if I took the traveling job, since food and such would be covered for those times.

I dont know much about your type of work but the travelling job sounds like a winner for a couple years. Then maybe another opportunity would open up to be more stable in one location. Wish i had an opportunity to travel in my current job.

I'm thinking I could probably handle it for 1-2 years tops. I hven't had much opportunity to travel over the past 6 years, and have been itching to see the world. But the job in Atlanta pays more, and is more inline with my career goals.

Traveling the world on the company dime for a couple years sounds pretty darn good.

Personally, the traveling job would be ideal, but I've traveled for work before and I know that it suits me. Most people think "oh, that'd be great!", but the vast majority get sick of it very quickly as you essentially have no constants and no anchor in your life.

Either way, your dad better be getting a kickback on this referral ;)

I owe him like $10k and he really needs it. He'd be getting $2,000 checks each month as soon as I got the job.

The travel will get really old, really fast.

Stick with #1 and work on getting your RCDD and then you can demand whatever you want money wise. That is if you like the facilities/physical aspect of datacenters.

OP, have you compared the cost of living for option #1? Just a thought - increase in salary might not be commensurate with the difference in the cost of living in Atlanta, when compared to your current location.

it's a bicsi cert that the industry values very highly. It basically means you know how to plan and design datacenters. It's pretty difficult as well and there aren't a lot of them which is why the pay is so great.

Thanks, I've already been googling it. Thing is, I don't have a bachelors. I dropped out to get into my career right away since I had nice job offers right out of high school. I do have about 15 other certs though (mcse, royal comptia flush).

I'm even wondering if I want the change. I've been with this company I work for now for several years, it's a small company of 18 (not a giant company of 20,000), and I have one boss, the owner. I can be late and not get bitched at. I can call in sick and not get bitched at. I have a startup company I'm working on which is located in the same building, plus I just signed a lease on a loft apartment two blocks away. I consider what I have now pretty plush. While the base salary is less than half of the other jobs, if I land one $250k a year contract I'll get a $20k commission.. I could easily make $100k a year if I get some good deals. So it's possible that it would be more lucrative and stable for me to stay in my current job...

I guess you could always ask the guy if he would allow you to do that travelling job for a set amount of time. Say 2 years, then be moved to a permanent location. That way you dont get burnt out with all the travel yet at the same time get to see a lot of the world very few do.

I'd take the traveling one myself, assuming you don't have an SO or anything else like that to worry about. I normally travel myself (only in NA) and enjoy it but haven't in awhile since I've been stuck on my current project for quite awhile. I'd love to travel internationally for awhile.
You can pack away some money while you're expensing everything too. Food, electricity and heat bills should go down since you won't be around to use it unless of course you've got roommates.

I have a 100% travel job. It does get old fast. I would find out about per diem rates, what type of accommodations, etc. You do, however, grow used to the travel - it's not all bad.

I'm thinking two years tops.

can probably shift over to a #1 type position after some time as well (maybe even in a city less crappy that ATL!)

#2 sounds better to me. And that isnt even that much traveling. I mean, not that many flights.

That's a lot of movies, w00t. it's kind of sad how used to flying you get...one show I pulled an all nighter the last day (early flight) and I don't remember most of the flying portion :p

conflicting data
also would you like to payrent for something you use all the time (atlanta) or would do you want to make less money and pay for something you only use half the time.

traveling is nice, my cousin travels and he said if he could not be on a plane for the rest of his life he would be happier. not afraid of flying, just the lay overs, hassles, being left on the tar mat for hour long delays etc.
