Will previous IP address be stored on computer?

Hi guys,

I realise this is almost certainly the wrong part of the forum to post this, and I'm sorry, but I thought the people who knew stuff about computers might hang out here!

Here is my dilemma.

I am a member of an internet forum where I engage in the act of "trolling". I realise some of you may think that's childish and pathetic, but I have a lot of fun doing it, and I think I do it in style!

Anyway, eventually I got banned from the forum, and now every time I set up a new account, I get banned again pretty quickly (usually within a day). They always tell me the reason is "you're a keysersoze dupe".

By looking at my IP address or whatever they realise it's the same person. Even though that's pretty unfair - it's not impossible for 2 different people to use the same IP address, or even the same computer. I'm not sure exactly what information the forum moderators have on me, mac address, IP address, etc, I really don't know much about computers.

Anyway, I'm moving house in a few weeks, and I'm also buying a new laptop.

Here is my question.

If I were to get my brand new laptop at my new house, and join the forum again, they would have no way of knowing it was me. A brand new computer, and a brand new internet connection.

BUT, if I get my new laptop before I move house, am I safe to go on the internet with it?

What I mean is, even if I don't visit the "forum" I'm talking about, but just surf the internet before I move house, when I get to my new house, and sign up to the forum again, will they be able to "see" that the laptop has previously accessed the internet on the IP address of my current house?

Because if I get to my new house, sign onto the forum, with my new computer, I'm paranoid they'll know that the computer has previously been used on the IP address they associate with me - ie my current IP address. And they'll just ban me again, cos they know the laptop has previously been used at this IP...

Sorry if I'm not being very clear here, hopefully that made sense.

Would really appreciate some advice!

And should note I'm not a malicious troll, in fact many members of said forum expressed great sadness at my permanent ban. I just didn't see eye to eye with a few of the power crazy moderators.

Thanks...

I hope they ban you from here too. Permanently.

They know who you are. Now these forum mods are going to tell your other forum that you are planning to do this, so your plan is ruined.

In fact, they can see inside your webcam right now. I would just uninstall the internet and call it a day. Its the only way to be safe.

Huh? Why?

It's just a bit of harmless fun. It's the moderators who are the problem - the sticks up their asses have sticks up their asses.

Do you actually have any insight to my dilemma though? Would really appreciate it.

Harmless fun for you at others' expense. Part of the definition of "asshole". Why should we help you antagonize people?

If it really is the mods, then the solution is easy. Leave. In the meantime I assure you you won't be welcome here, and if history holds true the mods here will readily IP ban you should you start your trolling.

I could also go into the psychological ramifications of getting a rise of of negative attention, but I've got better things to do.

I wouldn't dream of trolling a forum as prestigious as anandtech.

And anyway, I can assure you I am not a "troll" in the conventional sense. I am the master. It is done with a class you can barely begin to imagine. My "trolling" always teaches an important moral, or demonstrates a flaw in the masses. It is "trolling" with a commendable purpose.

But anyway, I was looking for a simple Yes/No answer, not a psychological analysis.

So? Am I safe to browse the net on my new laptop before I move house?

Not here. Good bye.

Let me see if I can inject some constructive advice here. This is a big forum, particularly in the off-topic section. That, plus the fact that moderators used to be anonymous, has tended to lead to a significant number of people leaving or being kicked out. The number is significant enough that alot of them have congregated at another forum. I'm not sure if I should link to it here, but it has a t, an f, and a couple of n's.

Anyway, if the moderators at your forum have made as many people angry as you claim they have, is it possible that some of them have congregated at another forum? If not, you could always start one of your own.
