Will Portals: MSN, AOL eventually replace OS's?

eventually, do you think portals will eventually replace OS's for most people on Internet browsing gadgets and PC's with OS's eventually be used just for specialized work and games and such?

what do you guys think?

i'm a pretty big fan of MSN Premium right now, it does a lot of good stuff for me.

Can't really imagine how that would even work, so I'd have to say no.

i guess you would have had to use MSN Premium to understand.

i can have all my emails in MSN, pop, html etc. MSN replaces Outlook 2003 for me basically, plus it has MS Money built in, so i can take care of my finances, plus it has Encarta Premium built in (great for my kids).

basically, all you need to do is have a simple OS (windows CE) run IE and from there, MSN does the rest.

just for PIM and Browsing purposes, i think it would work well.

Think outlook 2003 + MS Money + Encarta all built into one app available via the web.

that's what MSN Premium is.

Google will conquer the world. They are already invading the desktop. They opened a beachead with the Google toolbar, and now the desktop search. And with rumors of a Google browser? I won't be surprised to find a Google computer eventually. Oh yeah, and Go GOOGLE!

It seems the industry is slowly moving back to the thin-client/master server model of computing. A lot of software companies can't wait to start charging subscriptions to their software packages.

seems very in efficient and slow to do everything over the network

true everyone is online but it seems like a single point of failure (if network is down)/security issue to have everything be online

You mean this?
It's an x86 server set up as a turnkey Googlecluster solution.

god i hope not. even broadband isn't fast enough for a portal to replace your OS. that would be like taking all your favorite programs and running them on a Pentium 60. i've gotten quite used to everything i do taking zero time and i'm not going to go back to the days of the hourglass just so microsoft can collect and sell my usage data.

edit: besides, can you imagine how much more built-up the internet would have to big to handle that kind of traffic? the bandwidth necessary to run millions of computers in real-time would be astronomical, not to mention the processing power that the portals would need.
