Will PocketPC 2002 run on a Sharp Zaurus? (64MB)

N8Magic

Lifer
I can get a pretty sweet deal on one, but I don't want to run Linux.

I assume since it has a StrongARM processor it won't be a problem, but I want to be sure before I drop the cash.

Anyone own one of these bad boys? Are they worth the dough?

N8Magic, I don't own one, but when I had the unit in my hand it felt kinda cheap in my opinion, hope this helps 🙂

🙁

Thanks for the input. I really like the idea of a pop-out keyboard. It looks very similar to the one on my Blackberry, so it shouldn't take much getting used to.

i would doubt that ppc will work on it, the bios is completly different.

linux rules though, i love my zaurus

Yes, the MS PocketPC OS is compiled device-by-device to that exact hardware, there is no "generic" version.

well theres couple different versions for arm, mip and sh3, but the arm based deviced have to have similar structure. The opnzaurus distro is based of the one for ipaq (also avialbble for cassiopeia - mips). If oyu could find a way of botting it on the zaurus, i wouldnt think there be trouble with it.

You mean... it will run ANY Linux software? (within reason)

Sure, if you have MS' Platform Builder and (windows not linux) driver code for video, sound, slots, ports, and buttons you could easily compile a version for that device.

I didn't say it couldn't be done by some h4x0rs with a cracked copy of Platform Builder, just that you can't get a generic "PocketPC OS - ARM CPU" file and expect it to run.

I think those SNES emulators are a bit slow.

I'm running an NES emu (PocketNester) on my 300Mhz Dell Axim (Xscale) and it's pretty slow 🙁

Yes. Zaurus runs Linux. It's not "Linux lite" or anything like that, it's Linux. You can run Apache on the thing if you want to 😉!

Oh yes!

The Zaurus SL-C700 is seriously cool. Wife is using a Zaurus SL-5500, if they officially sell the SL-C700 in the US, I'll buy one in a heartbeat😀
