Will platinum set off a metal detector at the airport?

So I'm going to be flying out somewhere with my gf and plan on bringing a platinum ring with me. I don't want to put it in my carry on because there is a small chance that she might see it as it passes through the x-ray system. Will a platinum ring set off the metal detector if I keep it in my pocket? Anyone have any other suggestions?

Little thing like a ring won't set it off. Make sure to get rid of anything else metal like a belt that might help in setting off the buzzer.

Probably not, but any metal might depending on the sensitivity of the detector. Here's a tip... have your GF go through first. :)

Dunno about platinum, but i have never needed to take off my gold wedding ring as it never sets off the alarms.

Have a carry-on, like a backpack? Just keep it in there. No need to open that up before it goes through the scanner.

My gold chain has never set off the metal detector at the airport...so i think you should be fine with the ring. If it does set it off...just take it off and walk through again.

you'll probably be the first person ever to go through an airport metal detector with a platinum ring so please post results. This could be ground breaking stuff

I flew to Italy to propose. Just to be safe, I had a waist pouch for money, passport, and I tied in a little piece of string to tie in the ring. She never suspected a thing. If I just had it in my pocket, I really probably would have dropped it when fumbling for keys, my wallet, etc. The ring didn't set off the metal detector. They are calibrated so that little bits of metal don't set them off. Otherwise anyone with jewelery or zippers or belts or metal buttons would set it off. Think thousands of false alarms a day and the nightmare that would create.

If you want to be really careful, just stuff the ring in your wallet before you go through the metal detector. The wallet will not go through the metal detector. It'll go through the x-ray machine. Sure, the security will know you are about to propose, but your GF won't.

The last time I went through the airport metal detector, I still had on my watch and gold class ring. I took off everything else metal, and it did not set off the metal detector. Was kinda surprised actually

You usually have to empty your pockets, I would put in in the carry on. I can pass through with piercings though no prob.

Put it in a pocket in the carry-on. I don't remember ever being able to see the x-ray screen at the airports I've been to.

Put it in a lead box in the carryon. Wrap some wires around it, and run them to a circuit board from a clock radio.

foolproof, they won't suspect a thing.
