im about to buy a new build, and i just realized that the memory im getting surpases the "standard" speed of my motherboard. i am planning on getting an asus p5w-dh deluxe/wifi-ap with 2gb crucial ballistix PC2-8000, and an e6600
will this work?

Absolutely. You can simply run the memory at DDR2-800 (PC2-6400). But, the excess speed capability of the memory means that when you overclock, you don't have to worry about how far the memory can be pushed.
