Will PC133 ram work with an old Soyo socket 7 TX mobo?

I want to upgrade the ram in my old computer. The motherboard is a Soyo 5bt5 socket 7 tx chipset. Simms are so expensive I wanted to upgrade the ram using dimms. Can I use the new PC133 SDRAM on this old motherboard? or is it limited to that old PC66 stuff?

As long as the DIMM sockets are 3.3v it should work. I use several old socket 7 boards that have both simms and dimms and pc133 work fine.

Oh I forgot to ask. If anyone else reads this, Do I have to run DIMMS in pairs similar to SIMMS. Ex: 2 16 meg sticks or Can I run DIMMS in Odd numbers like the newer motherboards? Also what am I limited to in size for each DIMM slot on this motherboard, up to 64 megs in each slot?. Its a socket 7 TX chipset.

DIMMS don't have to match like SIMMS, but SIMMS run at 5 V, but DIMMS run at 3.3 V. You should have a jumper to change that setting. Some of those older motherboards can only handle 64 MB in one slot, so I'd do some checking around before I bought any 128 MB DIMMS. Try to figure out what board you have and then do a lot of searches on the net. Maybe you can find a manual for it.

Doh, I didn't read your whole post. See if Soyo has a manual for that mobo on their site anywhere.

I was given an old Elitegroup TX mobo, and it was the only mobo that was able to run that free CompUSA PC133 64MB DIMM (4 Infineon chips per module) at every BIOS setting. My Soyo Intel 440BX and FIC VA-503+ had major problems with that memory, both at 66 and 100 MHz, but they worked fine with some cheap Fry's PC133 (AVL chips - what are those?).

I had a Tyan S1573 Turbo 2 motherboard with the TX chipset and it had 6 SIMM slots and 2 DIMM slots. I ran it with a 128 MB DIMM of generic PC-100 ram and it worked fine. Actually it still works fine (at my father in law's house) with a 64 MB DIMM of Mushkin PC-100 budget ram. I would think unbuffered DIMMS would work fine in yours. Some people will try to tell you that since the TX chipset can only cache 64 MB of ram, more will slow down your system. But, in my experience, the system was slower with 64 MB than it was with 128. Good Luck.

A quick update to the "will PC-133 ram work on a TX motherboard?" Well, maybe not! I just tried to install a Kingston Valueram 128 MB DIMM in my Soyo SY-7IWM/L with a Celeron 366 and it would not work at all! Being an intel 810 chipset I thought it would work no problem. It runs fine with a Kingston PC-100 Valueram cas2 128 MB DIMM, so I can only assume that there is a timing issue problem or something. Either that or the PC-133 is only backward compatible to PC-100. At any rate, the PC-100 DIMM is back and my dreams of 256 MB of ram for our "slow" system is quashed.

Well, I'm going to assume that PC133 will work. The manual for my TX motherboard shows 64 meg DIMMS as being allowed. My question is... has anyone tried 128 meg DIMMS in a TX chipset socket 7 motherboard? I'm about ready to buy ram but I'm unsure as to the limits of each DIMM slot.

Thanks
