will pc133 ram work in pc100 system?

Spindler

Senior member
just bought a new pc133 128 ram stick, albeit generic brand, from fry's electronics, but it wont run on my pc100 system (celeron oc'ed 450). popped my regular old pc100 64ram back in and it ran fine.

now, i always thot that the ram would automatically drop down to whatever speed the system is running at. any truth to this?
any idea whats going on?

i'd prefer to stick w/ the pc133's for the time when i upgrade and would need faster ram chips. especially now since they are both about the same price.

Spindler, I noticed that too. I prefer to buy pc133 since the pc100 will be less useful later on. Maybe there is a way to get it to work.

Hi Spindler,

I have also purchased the PC133 ram from Fry's, but both times the memroy worked fine. I have used it in a BX based system and in a VIA 133A mobo. It runs it at 133 MHz without problem. Just remember it is CAS-3 ram.

PC133 just means that it will (usually) run upto speeds of 133mhz.

Several questions for you Spindler:

Does your MB support 128mb RAM modules?

Did you try putting the RAM into a different slot?

Did your old ram have ECC, and your new RAM not ECC?

Have you adjusted your RAM settings (timing/CAS) in BIOS?

You just may have a bad stick of memory...but take your time to make sure that is the problem.

Good Luck!

Hi there,

This is a very naive question. Can you mix ECC and Non-ECC RAM together?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,
Edward
