I'm trying to revive my old Sony desktop. I have a 64MB memory that's the proper 66Mhz. I want to get 2 128MB memory but 66Mhz is so old that its expensive. So i was wondering if I can buy pc100 and put it in and it will work fine?

Everything I see says my computer needs 66Mhz ram...

TIA!

Yes, PC100 will run at 66-100 and anything inbetween just fine. The 66,100,133 number is just the limit number that the ram will go to. If you use PC100 ram, it will run at PC66 speed.

Stay away from PC133 RAM though, most of it sold now is "high density" that your old motherboard won't recognize.

Before you buy the PC100 you might use the memory selector at crucial.com to check their prices, and if they aren't much higher it might be worth buying there since they guarantee the ram will work.

simplex:
if it's an old Intel LX chipset you can't use anything but PC66.

You sure? I used a PC100 128MB stick in a intel ZX chipset board (the "budget" mATX-oriented version of the LX).

(edit) and FYI simplex, crucial.com's current price for PC66 is $44 per 128 MB.

I've used PC100 in LX boards without any problems, but as DaveSimmons mentioned. high density is a no-no though.

look yes you can. You cant run it at anything beyond 66mhz though. Listen, all pc100 is, is the same memory as pc66, but it can be run at higher clocks, there is NOTHING stopping it from running lower clocks. Same with dd. PC3200 can run at lower speeds.

newer ram, especially cheaper stuff PC133 does have trouble running on older boards because of the high density. I too had issues running PC100 not on an LX chipset but on the ZX one.

But generally speaking PC100 will run at 66mhz.

HELP!

OK i think I might have did something wrong...I bought some PC 100 memory from a seller on ebay and it turns out I bought 128MB PC 100 ECC ram. I put it in but I can't even get a screen to show, the computer just beeps...

Ihave a feeling ECC ram doesn't work with my old computer?

Or is it because I used PC100 ?

Your board very likely does not support ECC and will not work with it. Did the seller list the memory as ECC?
