Let's see...NV's current cards are every bit as good as ATi's....and I can buy them now, and get more performance for less money....

Yeah, sure they will :disgust:

I see absolutely no need for Nvidia to release a higher tier card than the 7800GTX, and I'll bet you neither does Nvidia. In fact, if they're *really* mean, and they *do* happen to have a 32 pipe core floating around ready for production, I imagine they would put it on a 90nm spin, ramp the clocks up, slam 512MB of memory on the PCB, and deliver a bone crushing piece of graphics hardware early next year.

But hey....maybe they'll be gentle instead.

No offense, but you are a n00b because the CEO of nvidia clearly stated

"We will not be manufacturing a 7800Ultra"

In one of his talks.

If it were a question of mean or gentle, then they would do just that.

Unfortunately, at this point in time, if either company would be to release an extra-pipe version of their cards, it would be shooting themselves in the foot, and cannibalizing their own sales.

ATI and Nvidia have to hold off of higher-piped designs for next generation, otherwise there won't be much of a difference aside from features. For Nvidia to release a 32-pipe card now, while their 7800GTX is selling for $400+, would be self defeating. They aren't going to sell many cards unless it's a similar price, and then that would drive down the price of the other (expensive to produce) 7800 cards.

Although it is nice to wish :) .

first, it hasn't been "pwned" (even w/o taking into consideration x1800xt hasn't shipped yet)

also nv has stated the gtx is their "flagship", so the chances of the ultra are "iffy" at best.

The ultra would just be a higher clocked 7800GTX with faster memory. You can already buy something like that off asus (490 clock, 1300 memory).

How is an ultra gonna be any better than a vendor OC'd gtx? If they release a 512mb gtx, and evga OC's it by 50 mhz, that's about as much as I can expect from an ultra, only maybe with better availability and not-so-ultra price. Also, if Ati's r580 has 32 pixel shaders, then Nv will need a lot more than 32 pipes in the g80 to compete with it, given that it can barely keep up with a 8 pipe advantage in the gtx.

Gotta love that cheese reference and photo!!:D

The 7800Ultra is coming. It will be a 90nm part with 24pipes clocked at 500-550Mhz and the ram running at 1.5. It will be a dual slot cooled solution. It will have 4 "dead" pipes to activate if ATI actually gets the R580 out by the end of the year. It will arrive in 1-2 months time. Now that I've stated all of this as fact like I know exactly what I am talking about I should add that I don't have a clue but I think this is what Nvidia's answer will be!

Edit- It will of course have 512mb of memory.
