Will Norton AntiVirus 5.0 work properly on Win2k?

Nope,

I've tried all of my previous versions of Norton (other than 2002) and none of them work. XP will "say" that it is "incompatible" and has "issues" with this version of Norton.

5.0 won't but 6.0 will. Right now that's the version I'm running on all W2K desktops here.

I'm testing 8.0 right now, but I got issues as to how easily it's going to be for me to have users update their definitions. The Intelligent Updater doesn't seem to work nor does LiveUpdate. According to their website it's a known issue with LiveUpdate and they haven't figured it out yet. I can't find anything on the Intelligent Updater not working. It runs and unpacks the definitions but NAV keeps chugging along with the old ones even after a reboot. 🙁

For anyone interested I've solved the problem in my post above. The solution is to fire up regedt32 and navigate to HKLM\Software\Syamantec\SharedDefs. Change permissions on that object to Full Access for Users (You can get real picky and you just the advanced options you need but I'm keeping this simple). After doing this you should have no problem updating your definitions using the downloaded Intelligent Updater file while logged on with a User account.

That area in the Registry contain keys that point at the location for the current definitions. If the User doesn't have the proper access to them it cannot set the keys to look at the new definitions.

<< Will it work? Well 2001 will. Will it work well? Nope. Long Live Panda Antivirus... the AV King! >>

I've never had a problem with NAV not stopping viruses. Hope Panda works better than your link.... 😉 😀

Link works fine for me. Not saying that NAV doesn't stop viruses, Panda just does it more efficiently. Panda Platinum beat NAV and McAfee hands down in tests done by PCmag, ZDnet and C/Net. Doesn't tax your resources (maybe 1%), easy to update, updates released everyday... list goes on...
