First i would like to say hello to everyone on the forum, this is great place! I have been coming here alot lately and just now joined.....

O.K. when i first put my system together i was just learning all there is about computers and at the time i didn't know much about hardware and the likes, so i pretty much just got what was cheap, and now as i am more knowledgable i know that cheaper is not always better.... well anyway i was just wondering if i bought a new mobo with the same chipset but a more reputible company such as msi or asus would i see considerable differences in speed.... I am currently running an Intel P4 Northwood 1.6ghz pc2700 ram 60 gig hard 5400rpm with a cheap ECS mobo....

thanx for your info......

At best you might see a 1%-3% increase. Though it wouldn't be perceptable to you as a user, only via benchmarks where you could compare raw bench test numbers. If you want better performance, consider upgrading your processor and especially your hard drive since it is only 5400 RPM all based on the information you gave.

The biggest bottleneck in your whole system will forever be the 5400 rpm drive. Untill you upgrade that to 7200 rpm you'll have major issues with performance. As for the board issue, generally boards form the "standard" companies are faster than lesser known brands because they have better implementation strategies and manufacturing processes. But as was said, any gain you might get form upgrading to a better board is lost when anything has to access the HD.

I actually hate how companies always talk up hard drive sizes (this computer had a 200GB HD!!!) and it only spins at 5400 rpm... The HD is one of the biggest bottlenecks in computing today and at such a slow spin speed, a 3Ghz P4 is pointless. The only advantage to drives at 5400rpm is price, and for quite environments where speed isnt that crucial, like a library.

Ok, rant done

ECS mainboards usually aren't exactly slow, they just don't have any funny toys on, and are produced in huge quantities.
So if you want to make your system faster, look for other bottlenecks first - do your applications benefit from more RAM? Will a faster HDD speed things up? Graphics card?

i knew that my hard drive was a real bottleneck in my system.....i think for now i am goin to just slap some more ram on my mobo and wait till i can find a good deal at best buy or somewhere with rebates and what not on a 7200 rpm hdd...

Thanx for the info
