Will my Radeon 9500 be good enough for HL2?

Just like the subject line says. Am I gonna need a serious upgrade? The rest of my system is 512MB DDR, Athlon XP 1700+ @ 2088Mhz on an Epox 8RDA.

Yes, your system will run HL2. The question is how good? And how good do you want it?

How should we know how HL2 will run? AFAIK no benchmarks have been released.

9500 or 9500 Pro? The Pro will make everything smooth but I guess it will still play in your 9500.

It is a non-pro. But the core is at 324 and the memory is at 317. So it is clocked almost as high as a pro. I dont mind using 1024x768 so long as the details can be on. Also, sorry for the speculative question to begin with.

I doubt that very much.

Only because you insist on 100FPS under every circumstance. I'd be fine if it never dipped below 50FPS or so. :)

I am shocked...
That I doubt it or that it won't run well at 1600 x 1200?

Never dipping below 50 FPS is fine for me too (well, I prefer 60 FPS but 50's still OK). I'm saying you'll be lucky to pull 30 FPS average at 1600 x 1200 @ maxed settings on a 9500 Pro.

it was called sarcasm
I wasn't being sarcastic.

Doubt very much you will be able to do 1024x768 max settings (even with AA/AF off). If you have managed to try out the Doom 3 leaked alpha, I would guess it MIGHT provide an approximation for HL2's performance (both HL2 and Doom 3 appear to run similar frames from the movies I've seen).

Then you haven't been paying attention, dear. You're all basing your answers assuming HL 2 is as much of a hog as DOOM 3. It can better be compared to UT2003. Although it's true, you may want to upgrade the card a BIT, and probably WOULDN'T be ablebto run it at that high a resolution, but would you want to?... I dunno about you guys, but I can barely read anything when it goes above 1024x768...

Whats there to read in half life 2 that makes it worth sacrificing resolution?

I was speaking more of running it in multiplayer. You know, when your team is chatting with you and things like that.

Unless you have a bigger than 17" screen ... I own a Sony 19" Trinitron monitor ... I gess I can read about everything at 1280x1024 and even at 1600x1200 (at least most of the text).
