I had a thermal shut down a few times due to cpu getting too hot, would this damage the cpu's performance at all ?

finally added a fan on top of the heatsink to solve my problem,,.

It should be fine, the Thermal Shutdown is there to stop it from frying itself. I've never heard of anyone frying a P4 by not having a heatsink on it.

You were trying to run a 3ghz Prescott with no cpu fan?

well, i upgraded my dell, if you are familair with dell's , they use a shroud, the directs the air from the fan to the heatsink

I upgraded from a 2.4c, i didnt know dell used different fans..

so on dells that came with the 3.0e , they had stronger fans. mine didnt.

Well, your temps are pretty much normal for a Prescott, assuming the cpu temp you give is 100% load, like with the Prime95 torture test. And I don't have the slightest idea what a Dell pc usually benchmarks at, but I do know that your hard-drive's speed affects your score in PCMark 2002, and that a Prescott runs considerably slower than a P4C does. Someone around here has one, and says that it compares to a P4C that's 400mhz slower.:(
