I've the Dell 700m pretty much similar spec as yours except for 1.6GHz Pentium M, 768 MB RAM, and a slower 4200 60GB hard drive. It runs Vista fine, but it doesn't feel as fast or responsive as XP. I'm currently using RC2 so the RTM version might be more fine tuned.

What you might want to do is get some extra ram in the form of the "thumb" drive for a usb2 port. Not every brand/version works, so you might want to ask around or do a google search on compatible drives, but Vista has a "boost" feature that uses this ram as a cache for the OS. I've read that using say 512mb or 1gig of this ram will make a big difference in performance on laptops with only 512mb of ram. As to installation, maybe you should try out the RC1 version of Vista. It should automatically configure itself to meet your hardware situation. By using RC1 it will allow you to get a good feel for the OS and also see how it performs on your laptop. I suspect it will work just fine.
