Will my laptop run GTA IV properly?

Hi guys

I would really like to play GTA IV, but I am unsure if my laptop can handle it.

I run Windows Vista 32 bit, and has a C2D 2.0 CPU, 3 gigs of RAM and a Geforce 8600GT video card with 512 mb dedicated RAM. I would like to run a 1200x800 or 1200x720 resolution.

I do not mind turning down the details.

I should meet the recommanded requirements, but you cannot always trust those. What say you guys?

Should run it just fine. You won't be using any AA/AF though :p.

Edit: Bad advice, from what I've read you'll be looking at a max of maybe 30fps at 800x600. Tweaking can be done, and you can run it, but not at the resolution that you would like. Apparantly a lot of people are having a hard time with this game because it is very CPU intensive.

Hey, that sounds a lot like my desktop, but with more ram and less cpu!

I hadn't even bothered since i already have it for PS3 and I figured my pc couldn't beat that without some upgrades.

My laptop is the exact same as that with 1GB extra of ram and 256 on the 8600 instead of 512. If you have a console you would be better off buying GTA IV on that because that 8600 will struggle with it, also GTA IV apparently really needs a quad core. It might run ok with all settings on low i guess.... but seriously consider the console version if its an option.

will run it very poorly

like 800*600 everything at lowest settings

I'm thinking 20 FPS (hopefully)

To run GTAIV at satisfactory levels you will need a system very similar or better than that shown in my signature. Nothing lower will suffice.

Its sad that in order to play a mediocre game ported to the PC you need a supercomputer. Like the PC version of Guitar Hero 3 runs like utter crap on the PC in my sig.

There's no way this will work. I play the game with an E6600 overclocked by 30% and it still struggles to get 25fps. With a stock 2.4ghz E6600 the game would only run at maybe 20fps if I was lucky.

Yeah I have that game too. It's not so much the CPU as it is the hard drive lag that kills it. If I didn't know any better, I'd say GH3 doesn't even use ram. It's reading directly from the hard drive all the time so any kind of background activity causes the game to lag out.

Indeed. Don't know if porting games is just extremely difficult or they just half ass it most of the time.

Laptops were never meant for gaming. Trying to play a game that struggles even on high end desktop PCs, on a laptop, is clearly a mistake.

I booted it up on my system in sig, runs so so at 1920x1200 default settings for the most part, with some really odd slowdown. 1 fps for 3-4 seconds when cutting to a scene across the street of a ice cream vendor and some civilians. 10 fps here and there when driving around. Typically like 30 fps. The graphics aren't that great, and my system runs crysis better than that on enthusiast settings. Now I see what all the fuss was about.

turn off the clip record feature in GTA4

if it is off, then /shrug

your system should run GTA4 better than what you're describing above

also, I'm pretty sure GTA4 runs Vsync on by default and you'll have to either do a commandline to turn it off or force it off through Nvidia's graphic utility

I turned off the clip record feature, and I get fps in the 40's with occasional dips into 30's and sometimes 50's-60. Very playable, but on my system, it should be able to run this game in 3 windows while I watch 1080p on second monitor.

Whoever programmed this game should be shot with a gun that shoots at 1 foot per second from 400 meters away, so he can understand the pain that others are going through because of him. I say him and not them, because I sure hope that such poor programming wasn't from a team of people but from one terrible individual.

I played with an E4500@3.0 and an 8800GS and 2GB RAM and it was just fine @ higher resolutions, you just can't expect to crank the details up, but I got 30+ FPS.
