hey me again 😛 im just about ready to uby my system but my freidn says he could get stuff for cheap. so i told him what i wanted to get and he tells me to get a celeron cause my amd system will crash in about a year. he also tells me amd's have a 25% failure rate. where is he gettign this form lol

anyways can any1 recomand a 30-40$ (canadain) volcano, casue at my shop they have a fer thermaltake volcanos in that price range but i dunno which one is best. im gonna go do some research now too, but some of ur opinions would help immensely aswell.

thanks,

David.

ps-what is an ideal temp for the athlon xp'x (1800-2200+)

Welcome David.

AMD says the AXP core can go up to aobut 90C..

I wouldn't go over 60 C ...

Your friend is wrong, and Celly's suck.

😀

AMD CPUs typically have a 2%-3% failure rate. 25% failure rate?? Heh, anybody with that kind product wouldn't be in business long. And why would your system crash in a year?? That's just hogwash.

You're friend is full of it. He has no idea what he's talking about. Do not let him help you with your computer.

Just go here and buy your stuff. Best online retailer around.

one more for celery sucks. wow your friend either has a $999 celeron gateway or he is trying to sell you his $999 gateway for $1000

my 1700 REATIL PALOMINO goes 42C idle on a cool day. on a hot day under full load it has never gone over 56C. of course, no OC at all on the reatil HSF.

knock yourself out and get a $40 1700TB and a $10 HSF (US prices) that will eat your friend's $999 gateway for a mid-night snack

oh on the HSF's the antec is a dud, no idea what is startech, so it looks like "fermaltak" vlocano7 is good enough. the 7+ will cost you and i think its fan screams

Don't settle for less. Only get a Celery if you're getting a sub $1000 laptop, in which case you'll be less picky.

On the THG overclocking spree a while back, the XP1600+ was holding its own against a celery oc'd to 3.0!

The 7+ has an adjustable fan. Low, Medium, High. At High it is insanely loud but low isn't too bad at all.

Even 2-3% sounds quite high. 2 or 3 in a lot of 100 processors on the market winding up DOA? AMD would be out of business in no time.

system will crash in a year? is there programed code in the core to send windows into a fit after one year? i bet his computer is just loaded w/ bonzi buddy and friends.

you know what david, my guess is that your friend will probably offer to build the machine for you too. then he'd get an excellent chance to get rid of his used celeron

and jeff7 i think the DOA rate would be lower... if it's 2-3% the athlon would have the popularity to that of the IBM deathster

thnx 🙂

so im assuming the volcano 7+ is a good solution? i dont mind runnign it on high, aslong as i can get the cpu to last longer, screw noise 🙂

All of my computers are over 60c. Check my sig for descriptions. They've been running since the day they got assembled.🙂

That's perfectly fine, its just a guideline i like to stick to...

It can run 70C as long as it's stable...

According to AMD it can run 89 as long as it's stable, and you shouldn't worry unless it hits 90 =)

when it gets above 60ish... i dont really like it...but usually it hovesr between 56-60 when the cpu is 100% used.. so its okay...

and btw david: you might think fan noise isnt a factor..but it is...thats whati thought when i first put together this monster rig...just go for the quieter fans...

Actually, ALL computers are vulnerable to this! Watch the F out! 😛

On temperature, the one day I was stupid enough to turn on my computer without the fan plugged in (did have heatsink tho), it got to 75-78c (was getting hot too quick to be sure), and locked up. Then I powered down, and put an external fan on the heat sink for 5 minutes, then turned it back on. It's been working ever since.

My point ? I really think they need to be below 70, 65 tops would be my take. The 90c is in the core, and only the latest motherboards can read the diode, and even then may fluctuate in readings. BTW, my hottest comp is a Palimino 2100 and it gets to 56c under full load with a good HSF (copper). My 2700+ at 3000+ speed runs 41c full load.

I have a few amd base computers that's been up and running for over 3 years and only go off for updates or power outage. I'm guessing this but I think what they ment by the 2-3% failur rate is when they making the cores of the cpu and they have to throw some away because there bad. This means the cpus that are put out are ones that were tested and work.

PS) I have a duron 800mhz that runs at 34C on idle with a standard 9buck heat sink. All the other computers are around lower 40C depending on what i'm doing with the computers and how hot the house is. I hate the heat so I like to keep it lower then 70F. Anyways your computer will not blow up or anything unless you crack the core by installing heat sink wrong. Or like place water in it, or the mobo (motherboard) you have is like bad off and pop some caps that chan easly and cheaply be replace. Ahh really you should have no prob. Heck build it your self it's so freaken easy ya know. Need help you know where ya can come 🙂
